Introduction: Working with me you will learn a simple and clear method of singing. Natural, easy and comfortable. What you will learn is appropriate for all ages and both sexes. For half of the lesson we work on technique and for the second half, repertoire, both classical and music theater. If needed I am proficient in the diction of Italian, French and German.
My singers have appeared in most of the major and minor opera companies in the United States... including the Metropolitan and NY City Opera. They have also appeared in many of the opera theaters of Europe. I have had Fulbright students coming to me from Europe and going to Europe and Scandinavia. Helping people develop their voices is a joy not only for the student, but also to me. As a recommendation one of my former students wrote a recommendation to a friend..."Joan could teach a stone how to sing"... I haven't tried that as yet, and don't think I will. But for the pleasure of singing, and good hard work learning... I am the voice teacher for you. I also work on vocal projection as it is appropriate for acting.

Joan is one of the best singing teachers I've ever had. She is truly a wonderful person and knows what she is talking about. Listen to her and you'll never be disappointed. You will always have a voice and never once question your technique. She is kind and always wants to help her students. She is incredible and can help you achieve your biggest dreams!

Joan is an exceptional teacher who I have had the pleasure of studying with. I came to her with lots of tension and preconceived notions about how singing me should be. She taught me how to let go and let the sound be mine - not an imitation of someone else's sound. Her methods are natural, creating an even and healthy voice. She is devoted to her students as long as they are willing to listen and learn from her. Her studio is warm and welcoming. She knows her matierial well and has a wide knowledge of repertoire, from the standards to lesser known gems. Studying with Joan is a gratifying, endlessly enriching experience.

I have been studying with Joan Caplan for five years and it has been not only transforming for my voice, but also as a person. I came to Joan with a huge amount of tension in my jaw and tongue, and an uneven vibrato. I also was singing the wrong voice part. With her 5 action technique I have improved and made great process in developing a solid voice technique. Her teaching methods are appropriate for both a beginner and more advanced students. If you are in the NYC area it will be hard to find a teacher that is as experienced as her as well as supportive to her students.
