Introduction: Nick's mission as both an instructor and performer is to introduce audiences of all ages to the joy and excitement of Afro-Latin percussion. FEEL FREE TO EMAIL: Congas NYC at yahoo Nick has taught Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian percussionsince 1999. Many of his students have since joined bands and performed live around New York. His teaching approach for adults emphasizes clean and consistent sounds, the history and traditions behind the music, and a common sense approach to timing, pulse and the Clave Concept. When working with young students, his primary goal is to allow them to express themselves and create while learning about other cultures. Drumming classes are a great way to for kids to work as a team and learn how cultures throughout the world are all connected. Nick does not own a car, so traveling to students' homes outside of the five boroughs, while possible, is usually not practical or cost-effective.

I just started taking lessons with Nick recently but it's been a great experience so far. He's very knowledgeable and experienced with many different kinds of Latin music and I appreciate his enthusiasm. He's a cool guy and I look forward to working with him more.

I had started getting into Latin music a little over a year ago when I met first met Nick Herman. Originally, I tried to learn to play Latin percussion (congas, bongos, timbales etc.) from books and instructional videos. I also tried lessons with a few different musicians. I was at it for months, however, I found my progress to be very slow. Eventually, I confronted Nick about lessons. After only 5 lessons, my bongo playing had improved exponentially! I would play my bongos with other musicians in the park and after one or two songs, many people would compliment me on my playing. One night I played a duet with a guitarist who would compliment me on my playing after every song. Later, I came to find out he was the leader of a salsa band who frequently performed around the city! Shortly after that I made Nick my official trainer on the bongos and cowbell! Nick Herman also leads his own band. I think anyone who is serious about learning Latin percussion would benefit greatly by having Nick as an instructor. I wish I had began lessons with him sooner!

I have taken percussion classes from Nick Herman, and it has always been a nice experience. From basic strokes, rhythm patterns, parts, and timing methods, he will go through all of these phases with you as a teacher. Always lots of fun at these classes, and I would recommend Nick to anyone interested in learning percussion from any playing level.
