I am the author of Mirages and Flashbacks: Reflections of a Front-Line Gulf War Marine. The book was edited by Joyce Gilmour. The first thing that impressed me about Mrs. Gilmour was her writer-editor/ team-concept method of editing. I would email her sections of the manuscript which she downloaded, printed, edited and express-mailed back to me. She not only made accurate corrections in the text, but added helpful comments, notes and questions in the margins which caused me to think – and led to a bantering of ideas back and forth between us – about how to make some sentences and paragraphs more understandable and concise and make my work a better book as a whole. I would thereafter make the corrections and send her an email responding to the comments and notes and answering her questions, often submitting to her questions of my own. She would usually return my emails within a matter of hours and never more than a day or so later. The second thing – and equally as important – with which I was impressed was her editing abilities. She caught even the most miniscule of grammatical and language-usage errors and assisted me with combining paragraphs and rewriting awkward sentences. She also helped me with big-picture things such as ensuring events were in the right sequence, that disjointed parts were reworked so that they flowed, and that paragraphs and sections would make sense to targeted readers. She did all of this while working within my writing style and without altering any of the themes of the book. I was very pleased with Mrs. Gilmour’s efforts. I highly recommend her as an editor and I intend to retain her for my future books.

I can't begin to express my sincerest thanks and appreciation for the amazing job Ms. Gilmour did editing my debut novel, Instinct. Under the tightest of time lines, she was able to find things that had slipped past several other editors. Whether identifying glaring errors, or ones only a lover of the language would know, Ms. Gilmour astounds with her 'hawk eyes.' Moving with a speed and efficiency that should be applauded, she generated a 23 page listing that enabled corrections to be made before my book was released. I cannot thank her enough. If you want a professional, skillful and personable editor who truly wants to see you succeed, then you need Joyce Gilmour of Editing TLC.

Joyce did a wonderful job of both editing and helping find inconsistencies in my manuscript. Compared to other services Joyce is both competitive in price and was very thorough, going through two and three times. Her service is outstanding and I consider her my editor for life. We authors know editing our own work is a big no no but we do it anyway Now that I have Joyce on the job I trust her enough to leave it in her hands. Thanks for a wonderful job on my many novels (4 or 5 I think so far).

I am a not-yet-published author. After writing my son's story, I didn't have a clue what to do next. And then there was Joyce! She efficiently, gently, professionally took me under her wing. She knows her stuff and applies her skills from the copy editing to the encouragement a new author needs. We're in the printing stage now, and I would highly recommend Joyce Gilmour!

As a publisher, if I receive a manuscript I am interested in publishing, but needs more than a gloss edit, I suggest the author take the time to get it professionally edited. Editing TLC and Joyce Gilmour are always at the top of my referral list. I was introduced to her by several other authors. Every author I know who has worked with her, have come away with a highly polished piece or work - many having gone on to become award-winning books! They all say what a pleasure it is to work with her and praise her attention to detail. *What more can an author hope for in an editor. EDITING TLC will remain at the top of my referral list for some time!

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I decided to get into this line of work because I enjoy it, but the actually push into creating my business was the fact that I was reading some very good books (content wise) but the copy-editing was just not at the excellent level and that made me sad for the authors.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Be sure to build and maintain an open and honest working relationship. Remember the customer "owns" the product and the copy-editor is going to do her best to make that product be topnotch in quality. Print products do reflect on the professionalism of the customer's business.
