Introduction: For over 25 years I have taught English in College and High School Composition, which includes Standard American grammar and increasing the vocabulary most helpful to you in the real/professional world. We work on how to improve and develop your writing into well thought-out, organized, interesting and informative, cohesive writing units, like the classic 5 paragraph essay, which in the real/professional world is a paper/research/report. In college and high school I have also taught Speech. Informed by my professional theatrical background, my students learn how to speak succinctly in clear, non-accented American English. I've had the great pleasure to work with many ESL international students, and have adapted exercises from the Alexander Technique, which is used to disable performance anxiety in performing professionals, to use with my ESL students. When ESL students speak English they are, in fact, in "performance" mode, and this is the basic reason why ESL students have difficulty utilizing the English they have learned writing when they speak. I have been very successful with my ESL students, who leave our Speech classes with new-found confidence in their ability to speak clear, enunciated American Standard English without any discernible accent as a result of these exercises adapted from my professional performance training and experience, and my classic academic Speech background. Upon request, I am able to provide references from my ESL students about their learning experience with me and its positive results on their speaking skills. We review classic works of literature found in short fiction, along with non-fictional works. Every day students read and answer the subsequent 3 or 4 questions found at the end of the fiction/non-fiction reading comprehension passages I've written over the past couple of years, which -- once again -- organically improves student reading comprehension skills. These passages range from 100-400 words on a Grammar School to Junior High School Reading Level, and 500 words on the high school and college level. We go over our previous day's homework, after which students receive their new homework and it's due date. During our quiet time of Journal Writing, which lasts about 12 - 15 minutes at the beginning of our tutorial session, students write their personal experiences, thoughts and concerns, or they may use the Suggested Journal Writing Topic I provide for them if they require a prompt to begin writing in their journal. Their journal is never shared and is entirely private; hence, they can write freely about their thoughts; I simply check to see that they have written the two or three paragraph requirement. This exercise, which I developed over several years teaching Composition in college, develops and hones organically my students' intuitive writing skills. We discuss a chosen article or topic students find during their silent reading period, about which they have jotted down their thoughts and orally present; thus, students practice every day their writing and speaking skills required in the real/professional world.
