Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: Teaching: I was playing professionally prior to teaching, so my instructional method reflects the need for rapid acquisition of relevant skills. The SDML system focuses on building on strengths rather than merely remediating weaknesses. In addition, SDML certified instructors are very active in molding the curriculum to the student's needs, offer performance & recording opportunities, and offer a direct link into all aspects of the music world. Performing & recording: I have thousands of hours of experience on stage & in studios over the past 30 years playing a variety of styles, and I bring that - and the excitement that rushes up daily when I am reminded that I play guitar for a living (how cool is that?) - to the table for every gig. Seriously - I play guitar for a living! I can't even imagine a cooler job. As a guitar instructor, I get to watch people who have never touched a guitar develop rapidly into the guitar player they want to be; the musician they want to be; the person they want to be. To be a part of that is both exciting & humbling. As a player, I get to take part in a process that brings dreams into the real, and have it captured as audio, video, or by music lovers in a live audience. This is equally exciting & humbling. It is an honor to be a part of these artists' lives and try daily to live up to the trust they've placed in me. I smile constantly, every single day!

As a student of David's for more than five years, I can attest with absolute certainty as to the effectiveness of his teaching and mentorship. Under his guidance, two years ago I was able to begin a career in music full-time, and now teach and play guitar as a professional, earning 100% of my income as a self-employed musician. I firmly believe that this is due in no small part to Dave's knowledge, determination, and sincere desire to promote others and watch them succeed. He has taught me not only mastery of the instrument, but how to leverage my own strengths so that my considerable effort gains maximum benefits in my career, and in my life on the whole. If you are determined to be a serious musician, meet and exceed your goals faster and better than ever, and discover the true potential you have, then there is no real alternative in Kentucky, maybe anywhere, to David's Skinny Devil Music Labs guitar program.

My son studied guitar with David for two years and it was such a wonderful experience. I would listen to his teaching style with admiration (and a bit of jealousy... ahh, to teach without proficiency testing, what a treat). He is the perfect guitar teacher because he listens to his students and responds to their interests. Plus, he's just a cool guy we liked to see each week. So, when Carter said he wanted to take a break from guitar, David was supportive and now... one of the motivations Carter has to return to playing guitar is because he misses his teacher and that is what makes David so unique: the dynamic he creates between teacher and student is particularly special and it's been such a positive influence on our lives to know him.

The biggest mistake I made with David was waiting too long to call him. His impressive resume seems rather intimidating, but he is extremely accessible and approachable. Do not think "He is too good, he wouldn't want to teach me" as I did. While being very humble he is, simply put, the single most inspirational person I have ever met. If you have a strength he will help you find it and maximize it. He is the consummate professional in everything he does, but he has chosen teaching as his primary profession and is without a doubt the best of the best. David is such an excellent teacher that he has taught many of his students to also be excellent teachers(Paul and John below among others).

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

Nothing complicated, really. For lessons, there is a flat monthly rate (private lessons are $80/month) and a flat 8-week session rate (group classes $120/session). For live & studio work, rates are variable. Depends on travel (if any), rehearsal requirements, length of performance and/or number of songs recorded. I can do a package rate or an hourly rate...just contact me with details of your project and we'll make it happen!

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

There is nothing common about my job (hahaha!). I teach both group lessons and private lessons, am currently recording electric & acoustic guitar tracks for a dance club project client in Denmark, and prepping new material for my duo, who will be playing several large blues festivals this summer. Those are my common gigs!

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Get all the information, then trust your instinct. Many of us have skills and some are better suited to YOUR goals than others. But a big part of meeting your goals is how well we all work together. That comes down to attitudes and relationships more than the technical aspects of what we do. If your instincts tell you to go with me, then do it. If they say go elsewhere, then that is the right choice...and if you need suggestions for other instructors, studio musicians, or live performance players, just ask. I'll happily provide you with as many names as needed.
