Introduction: I cultivate a sense of leadership and responsibility in my students. I recently had a student apply to the Leadership Forum of Young Musicians, and this was his view on leadership: “When I first entered the orchestra program YOURS, I wasn’t much disciplined nor was I capable of being a leader of any sort. The program has disciplined me in ways that my grades in general have changed well. Before, I was a C student. I wouldn't really pay attention or even care much about my grades. Ever since I joined YOURS, my ways changed. Report Cards came in with A’s and B’s. Discipline has also improved. And lastly, it has taught me leadership. It has taught me how I am an example for the little ones. Skills I have been taught include musicianship, respect and caring for others around you, social communication, and adaptation to different atmospheric environments. Being a musician has taught me leadership.” I love seeing the inner change in a student as they gain the confidence, self-discipline, and expression that comes from learning a musical instrument.

It is a pleasure to work with Katie at The People's Music School. She is extremely professional, a teacher of the highest caliber, maintaining an excellent rapport with her students and colleagues. She teaches both oboe and theory classes, and coaches woodwind chamber groups. I highly recommend her as a musician and educator!

Katie works with my 12 year old son. Not only does she keep him on task and focused but makes the lesson interesting and engaging. She also gives him clear guidelines for practice and future goals.

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a bachelors and masters in oboe performance.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

If you really want your child to become a successful oboist, they need to get out their instruments and practice every day. Even if it's just 10 minutes, getting in the habit of sitting down, taking their instrument out of their case, and playing a few notes will lay the foundation of the habit of practicing.
