- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I price based on the materials...if customers want more expensive organic/nonGMO options, they will of course cost more. I approximate amount of the base materials (I don't worry about spices and additives as those are on hand) needed for the amount of material. I approximate my time and upcharge the items to include labor. I may add a travel cost if event is not near home.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I read cooking magazines. I have a great local source for tables, linens, etc., and keep their catalog near.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I have been feeding friends and volunteering to provide food for events held by nonprofits I serve for years. A couple years ago, our pet food store owner mentioned that she was looking for a caterer for their holiday party. I said, "what do you need?" It was something I could do, we negotiated a price, and that was my first gig.
