About
Hello! I am based in Lexington, KY, but offer piano lessons and French horn lessons online anywhere in the world. I will meet with you for a free 15-minute consultation before you sign up, to make sure we are a great fit for your lessons. I enjoy working with piano students of all ages, and can teach beginners as young as 4 using the Tales of a Musical Journey series by Irina Gorin. Using this series, my beginning students learn technique through creative imaginative play, such as imagining floating arms and cotton candy hands. We have a lot of fun while learning effective technique and note-reading skills. My horn students learn the fundamentals of playing the horn while playing standard and contemporary literature, etudes, excerpts. I assist elementary, middle school, high school, and college-age students with their pieces for band or orchestra. I also provide piano accompaniment as a free service for my horn students for festivals, recitals, and auditions. My aim as a teacher is to give students the tools they need to become independent learners and reach their potential as musicians. The mission of my studio is to help each student develop a love of music through playing the piano or horn.

We have had our 8 children study piano with Ms. McKinney for the past 7 years. She invests time and effort into helping each child develop the skills they need to become proficient pianists. I would highly recommend Ms. McKinney as a very capable teacher for any level student from beginning to advanced.

Ms. McKinney is very knowledgeable with regards to what is age and skill appropriate for her students. I feel she has a great rapport with kids and lots of "extras" in her studio to help motivate and inspire. My daughter especially saw great improvement in her skills through Ms. McKinney's guidance.

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

There are four payment options. Tuition may be paid for the entire year (including summer) at once, OR divided into semester installments, OR paid in equal monthly installments on the 15th of the month from August through May, with summer separate. Rates are available on my website and are updated annually.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I provide a FREE 15-minute consultation to discuss your goals for lessons and to answer any questions you may have. If we are a great fit, I will send you a link to schedule and confirm your lesson time and choose your payment method. The whole process takes only a couple days depending on my availability.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a Master of Music degree in performance and a B.S.ed. degree in Instrumental Music Education. I participate in local, state, and national music organizations and attend conferences and workshops whenever I can. The most recent conferences I attended were the Kentucky Music Teachers Association state conference and the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy in Lombard, Illinois. These conferences give me an opportunity to learn about new teaching materials, discuss teaching methods and ideas with my colleagues, and hear inspiring musical performances. All of these things help me keep a fresh perspective on the art of music teaching.
