About Northampton Sex Therapy Associates

Northampton Sex Therapy Associates (NSTA) offers sex education, sex therapy and sexuality counseling, and helps people discover and explore their sexual style and sexuality, both individually and in relation to their sexual partners. We offer services to people of all gender and sexual identities, lifestyles and orientations.

At Northampton Sex Therapy Associates, licensed and certified clinicians provide services to people with various sexuality concerns. NSTA clinicians are skilled in dealing with diverse issues, including, but not limited to, discrepancies in desire between couples, loss of desire, obsessive sexual behavior (sometimes called sexual addiction), fetishism, ejaculation or erection difficulties, issues pertaining to sexual identity and sexual orientation, issues of gender identity, sexual pain for men and women, challenges around orgasm, sexuality and chronic illness, vaginismus (contractions of the vagina that prevent penetration), sexuality and physical ability, sexual trauma and paraphilias, and polyamory.

All clinicians are skilled and highly trained couples and sex therapists who can assist clients in sorting out conflicts in relationships arising from differences in sexual values, attitudes, and/or behaviors.

Using an integrated approach that includes cutting-edge, evidence-based modalities, we assist couples in resolving their sexual problems. We are also able to provide insights to clients who already have satisfactory sexual lives, but seek to enhance their relationships in more creative ways.

We additionally provide help and support in showing people how to communicate about sexual needs and wants in clear and easily understood ways.

Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. When you are looking for a psychotherapist to help you and/or your partner with a sexual concern, it is important to look for a licensed and certified sex therapy practitioner. Certified Sex Therapists are specially trained in sex therapy methods beyond the minimal amount of training about sexuality that is required for the average, non-sex therapist, clinical license.

Choosing a certified sex therapist is like going to a gynecologist for gynecological problems rather than to a family practice doctor. Both have unique specialization in a particular area and the likelihood of better therapeutic treatment is significantly increased.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. A Sex Therapist's role is to help increase their client's potential for satisfaction and happiness in their lives and relationships. Their job is not to change a client's libido or sexual orientation but to improve the possibility of long-term contentment and self-acceptance. In order to make sure that a particular therapist is the right person for the job, ask a sex therapist the following questions:

* What happens in a sex therapy session?

* Have you worked with somebody with my concerns before?

* What kind of training have you had to equip you to work with my concerns?

* What do you consider to be "normal" sexually? (It's important to find somebody who is "sex positive" and won't be critical or judgmental about your particular desires or challenges.)

* Are you a member of an accredited member of a clinical organization? (Reputable sex therapists maintain professional memberships in organizations such as the American Association for Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists which uphold ethical guidelines by which sex therapists should be practicing.)

* What training have you had in couples/relationship therapy? (A really good sex therapist will be both an excellent couples’ therapist as well as someone with experience dealing with sexual issues.)

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. Northampton Sex Therapy Associates uses evidence-based clinical methods in our work with couples. Because of this, our success rate in working with couples is higher than that of the average therapist.

In addition, we use Biofeedback in our work with clients - particularly with couples - which helps them learn how to navigate the stress of an intimate relationship and teaches how to reduce and control challenging, and frequently negative, emotions. Biofeedback helps minimize the negative impact that emotional "flooding" has during disagreements in couples' relationships and leads to more productive relationship outcomes.

Q. If you have a complicated pricing system for your service, please give all the details here.

A. Northampton Sex Therapy Associates is contracted with Blue Cross/Blue Shield for all their health insurance plans, including HMO Blue. If we are not contracted with your insurance, we may still be able to bill your insurance if you have a PPO or POS (Preferred Provider Plan) that allows you out-of-network benefits. When insurance coverage is in question, Northampton Sex Therapy Associates is able to run a benefit check and discuss fees and payment options with you.
