I encourage you to do something today that scares you...It can be the most transformational journey you can embark on. I am not a runner, but I chose to take on training for a race, a 6k and it was the scariest thing I had done in a long time. I have scoliosis, a rod is clamped onto my spine and I have 6 fused vertebrae. I was told by my Drs that I needed to limit my high-impact activities and that running could cause a lot of pain and may damage my spine or my rod - worse case scenario, I could snap a metal wire and it could cause immense pain. But I didn't let this stop me... I have access to an amazing coach, Andrew Nelson with TCA Wellness and he carefully and patiently guided me to build up my endurance and strength. I went from thinking I couldn't run .25 miles (once around the track) to being able to run a mile without stopping. It was a huge accomplishment for me! I trained for 8 weeks. Some days were hard, I broke down and cried a lot. I was fearful, but I stayed true to my goal. With each moment that I felt pain, Andrew Nelson was able to assist me in altering my stride so that I was able to comfortably run. My biggest training accomplishment was when I was able to hit a trail that had three hills that I was able to tackle and I ended up running for 50 minutes straight without stopping and my body had zero pain. This last weekend I ran my 6k....and it was AMAZING!! I came in just under 44 minutes - 43:29. It felt incredible to accomplish this goal and I could not have done it without the professional and dedicated training of Andrew. I am now training for a 5k (because it will be easy), an 8k, a 10k and this next spring, I will do my first 1/2 marathon. I feel unstoppable. I feel like a badass. I feel like that negative voice in my head needs an attitude adjustment and I feel a sense of pride within me that I never thought possible! So... go out there and do something that scares you! Trust me, it will be worth it!

You did an amazing job in what we did and what you did on your own. You overcame your fear and conquered what you did not think you could.

I have had many trainers and Andy really sticks out as one of the best. I’ve been with Andy for a month or two. He is a good friend but also knows he is there to do a job. So if you want to be babied and pampered, you are going to the wrong trainer. Now, I’m not saying he is a drill sergeant either but he is the perfect mix of the two and that is hard to find! Trust me! Andy is available for any questions outside of the training session. It’s almost like he is on call and that is important to me when I have questions about any discomfort I may have as a result of workouts. Andy is very well rounded. I requested workouts focused more on figure skating and he said, “OK!” He has tailored workouts more towards me excelling at figure skating incorporating some stretching which I think is based on yoga moves. He is very knowledgeable about the human body both the physical aspects (muscles, bones, etc.) and the nutritional side. I have had a couple surgeries (ACL reconstruction and SLAP tear) which Andy is mindful of. Andy is also versatile. He doesn't just know what to do with weights but also uses many other techniques to help you meet your goal. Andy is great at knowing when to push you and when to back off which is important. Andy is really good at making sure he corrects your form when you are not doing it right which I really like. He isn’t one of those trainers that will show you what to do then not pay attention to you. His focus is on you, PERIOD! He is worth every penny!

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

There are trainer and there are coaches. Some are both. A coach is able to get to the heart of your training needs and build an entire program for long term success and guide you through any sticking points. A wealth of knowledge and strong intuition can lead to a greater ability to get you results in the gym and over all health.
