I found Batu Korman at the perfect time in life. I was getting more into music, getting really into vocals, and wanted a new skill to tuck under my belt. Drumming is a fitting thing to add to my musical education. And it looks really fun. But it also looks incredibly daunting as well. I knew trying it would mean needing to be not only on one's game since other band members depend on the beat. But also be able to intuitively know where to go with new material. In other words, a teacher that knows his stuff. And I definitely found that in Batu. My first meeting with him, he demonstrated his craft to me and I was blown away. He explained his approach and I was further amazed by the variety in his background of styles. This showed that he is not just centered around one tiny specialty. He seems to make an effort to continually expand his musical mind, and thus he is able to share more well-rounded things with his students. He can come up with things at the drop of a hat and could help me to learn the same. His approach as an instructor is approachable and very patient. I really feel like he enjoys helping others learn to a passionate degree. And he can easily determine where I go wrong when I do and kindly points me in the right direction. His knowledge is broad and I am finding it easier and easier to grasp with each lesson he gives me. I highly recommend this instructor. He will not only teach you. He will inspire you.

Batu is a guy who's the type of person to become the reputable individual known in the industry as the reliable and efficient type. Batu has helped me to practice my rudimentary foundation and establish a wonderful sense of playing in the pocket. Being a bassist as my primary instrument, drums secondary. He was also so proficient at the drums in what he taught me, that he even taught me a few things on the Bass from it. Honestly worth anyone's time and effort!

Batu is a great teacher, he is very knowledgeable and understanding. At times he was strict, but you could sense he was doing it for your betterment. He was always available for me and anything questions I needed to ask him. Although he is younger than me, it definitely felt like I was being taught someone with lots of wisdom. His English is rough and some times his sayings can be misunderstood, but he was always happy to explain himself and accept any mistakes he made.

Batu has been teaching my two girls, 5 and 7 year olds, chess. The lessons have been great, not only he teaches them the fundamentals, he also changes his teaching methods to match their needs. He relates them and makes the lessons fun and exciting. I'd suggest everybody to try his lessons out, not only chess.

Hired on Thumbtack

Contacted through Thumbtack with email, explaining my 80's / 90's background touring and the alternative bands I had played for; and that I haven't played in 20 years, and am starting up again; he responded to the first email, wanted to get together, seemed interested; emailed back asking for his schedule, leaving my phone number to let me know. No response. Waited a week. Called the number provided on Thumbtack website for him. (as he requested) Called and left message. No call back. Decided to try one more time by calling on a Saturday, he answered, gave some of my background again, mostly how I love Alan Holdsworth, said to check out my youtube channel to get an idea of my style; and would like to meet at his place in Mira Mesa. Let me know. Gave it another week. Too bad, was excited to find a fusion, funk, Latin rhythm oriented teacher.
