The dancing spirit studio and its teacher are unlike any I have met. I stepped in out of pure curiosity earlier this summer, looking for an activity to do with my sister during summer break. What I found has already changed my life for the better. The studio itself, well remember the book or movie the ‘The Little Princess’? When she wakes up to find herself nearly transported to another land, it reminded me of that. Plump pillows scattered on one of the walls with chairs covered in flowing gauze and fabrics. Beautiful plush rugs cover most of the floor, but where you can see the actual flooring, delicate little paintings linger there. The view is amazing, overlooking the river framed by brightly colored veils that catch the breeze and look as if they are already dancing, begging for someone to choose them. The walls are lined with quotes, artwork and pictures of students dancing and truly smiling, the kind that reaches there eyes and you know just by seeing that they are utterly and completely happy. It’s a place you feel comfortable in, somewhere you don’t have to pretend or be something else for the ‘outside’ world and society. This is where you can be you.
The teacher, Barbra or as she likes to be called ‘Barb’, is a god send. She’s like no one I ever met before. So confident, full of hope, so full of life! It didn’t matter to her I was a large woman, or I was shy and didn’t know how to move my body at all. She was determined to show me how to be that strong woman. Strong, confident, proud, how to actually love myself for who I am, all with the first step of a dance. She showed me how to connect to my body, how to make each step strong, cutting my own path through life be it dancing or outside the studio walls. While she taught me to really be myself, she never did stop smiling, always seeing the best in things and the possibility of what could come. While most of us find ways to bring ourselves down, she always counters with ways for you to succeed until all ways of failure seem to slip away with her enthusiasm. It was because of her, I found something that though I may never be the best that, it makes me the best person I can be, she helped me to find that.
Martha Graham once said that Dance is the hidden language of the soul. To many people don’t find that, can’t find that. She helped me find my soul, and I never want to loose it again. Aside from this, I can’t describe how she has helped me to find myself after what feels like a life time of being lost, and everyone around me see's the difference to. And I cant stress enough how I would recommend her to everyone interested in dancing, fitness, or just trying to find themselves. She will help change your life and I can only tell you, it is for the better.

I am lucky to have Barbara as my teacher. She has introduced me into a world of a lot more than dance, it is not just about learning movements, it is about letting the goddess in me come out and dance. This feels soothing to the spirit and my body learns new more graceful ways to move. Barbara is very passionate about allowing women to find the princess and dancer in them (and she is defini tely a talented dancer and teacher). Barbara is able to carve an entryway into the art of bellydance for us, people with two left feet.
The effect of her class is like candy for my self esteem, after her class I feel more attractive and walk and feel taller. And this feeling better about myself carries on long after the class.
Barbara is truly passionate about the dance in a deeper way than a bunch of movements, but dance as a way to hand to others a way to express themselves and their own femininity.
I highly recommend her classes to people any age as a means to better ourselves, and to better undestand ourselves. she is patient and able to work with anybody. barbara offers classes for children as well. My kids have enjoyed her classes, and will take more. What they learn is not mechanical dance, they have fun and learn that they all look and dance in their own way and all have something different and special to offer.

When you enter Babara Donahues Dance studio on Main Rd. in Tiverton, R.I you enter a different dance world of color ,drama , fantasy, full of warmth, spirit and beauty. Beautiful shawls/ veils of all colors, an oriental rug and framed mirrors combine to make a special environment. On a chair or on the carpeted floor you are welcomed to watch the most beautiful dancers, including of course Barbara, The Dancing Spirit with her friends from Providence and N.Y. The dances are full of variety but one is struck especially by the fluidity, elegance ,grace and variety of movement interpreting the very enchanting middle eastern music.
