FAQs
- What types of customers have you worked with?
Most commonly, I record commercials for radio and television. Since I have my own recording studio, I usually record from there. However, there have been times when I've had to access ISDN from a local award-winning studio. My favorite jobs so far were with Chevrolet. I've been the voice of the 2010 and 2011 Chevy Malibu in several states. In addition, I've recently recorded the voice overs for the 2011 Chevy Cruze ECO. Each time I read copy, I find out something I didn't know. According to the commercial I read, Chevy offers nine 2011 models that can get over 30 MPG or better. For example, did you know that the ECO has an amazing 42 MPG highway? I was just blown away by the excellent gas mileage!
- What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
I would probably say the most common misconception about voice over work is the amount of "behind-the-scenes" work it takes to complete a job. There is a great deal of investment in coaching and training before having a career in voice over. That's the fun, creative, and educational part of the business. In order to get the job done effectively, one must have an understanding of audio recording, so there is the hands-on mechanical side of the business. Lastly, managing the financial and marketing plan in the world of social media takes time and commitment. All that work is honed before the first job has ever been secured. However, for every finished minute of audio you hear, consider how long it took to discuss needs with a client, receive direction, set up equipment, record, playback, edit, tweak the audio, perhaps add royalty-free music, and email the mp3 to the client. Then an invoice needs to be sent and recorded upon receipt. Once all that has been done, it's always been great to work with the repeat clients. It's been my good fortune to have several folks that continue to reach out to me for their voice over work. I'm grateful every day for being in this profession!
