Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A. Ask questions .While the rough opening is the same , Older wood windows and newer vinyl windows have different dimensions when the finished product goes in . Will there be enough room between the existing siding and the new window for standard exterior brick molding(2 3/8inchs) , should you trim back the siding? Or should you put the trim through a table saw cutting it down to match the existing reveal?
Its going to depend on weather or not there is an equal reveal all the way around the new window . For instance if the top and bottom reveal (new window in) are 2 1/2 inches and the sides are 1 7/8 inches , what do you plan to do?
Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?
A. Never buy a new door for an old jam . It will never fit the same as the old door . Go ahead and get a new door and jam . The price differences is about 20% .
Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?
A. When replacing doors and windows get an idea before hand what you want the interior trim out to look like (color, stain) . In most cases the window jam itself has to be trimmed out as well as the casing . Simply put most vinyl windows are for 2x4 construction , we live in Alaska where most homes have 2x6 exterior walls . That leaves us a around 3 inches between the window and the sheetrock. Its an easy trim out and it looks great .If you have this in mind you can hand pick the materials you prefer .
