I am a professional artist in Anchorage. At my studio, I offer group and individual instruction to teens and adults in pastel and oil painting.
I also conduct ongoing "open studio" sessions which provide all materials and supplies, and instruction/suggestions on request, to participants.
The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, class sizes are small, and artists of all levels of experience are welcome.
Question and answer
Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?
A. My studio sessions are different in that all the supplies are provided, so people don't have to carry their stuff back and forth, and can try new media without a huge initial expenditure.
Q. What do you like most about your job?
A. My real job is creating works of art that satisfy me and my customers. My secondary job is passing my love of painting and what knowledge I have of it on to those who attend my studio sessions and workshops, and encouraging them to expand their horizons.
Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A. They don't ask me, they say they don't think they can paint. My answer is that everyone can paint, they just have to dare to try, and realize that it takes work, but it is some of the most rewarding and relaxing work in this life.
Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?
A. Besides teaching and mentoring emerging artists, I very much enjoy doing portraits of pets and gardens and creating my own paintings in both oils and pastels. Please see my website!
Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?
A. I don't think any artist should give up on taking workshops with other artists that they admire...it can't hurt to try new approaches and techniques. I like to participate in at least one workshop a year. I also belong to a group of (mostly professional) artists who do a joint critique once a month which is not necessarily a mutual admiration society...we can be pretty tough on each other.

I've actually not started going to Alexandra's Paintspot yet, but I'm writing because my roommate has turned me on to this wonderful treasure... she simply raves and raves about both Alexandra and the environment Alexandra has created and how generous she is with her time, talent, and supplies. My roomie, a skilled artist, brings home beautiful, beautiful paintings and speaks of how much she's learned from others at the studio. I've not painted before but this seems to be the PERFECT place to jump in and start! I've invited my daughter to join me there... can't wait to become a part of it all.

I have been going to Andy's "open sutdio " almost every Sunday for at least the past five years. I love seeing the other artists and their current projects. It is inspiring to see what everyone is working on. Andy always has music playing and the snacks are great (oh my, I gave away my real reason for going!) I love the easy going friendly atmosphere and it gets me away from the distractions of home. Andy has almost every oil paint color imaginable and provides all the supplies. All I have to do, is show up and start painting!

I have been attending Andy's Open Studio for approximately 2 years.
She is very generous with her supplies and her time. She gives excellent advice for improving one's talent and work. It is fun and inspiring also to have the company of other artists in varying stages of accomplishment.– Carol
