Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. We're here to solve performance problems and can even help quantify benefits using valid Instructional Design techniques. Successes come from identifying where procedures are causing unnecessary waste (product returns, customer service calls, or defects as a result of language barriers or varied work-methods due to vague procedures). If you think you have a problem stemming from these root causes, let us help with your analysis.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. There is a growth strategy that is inherent with the tools we use. The tools are not the same as other 3D animation development tools (like 3D Max or Maya). We can start with test products to see if they work for you, and if you'd like, you can learn these tools and develop internally. But it doesn't stop there because these tools will integrate with your business processes on an enterprise scale. When the source CAD is revised, Right Hemisphere has sophisticated automation programs that can automatically update revisions for print, presentations, service media and more. This is exactly how Automotive and Aviation industries maintain this type of collateral and there is significant ROI in this approach. It will even integrate with SAP who is a partner of Right Hemisphere.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. We leverage existing CAD 3D assets and compliment them with critical, task-oriented media to get a clear message through to the end-users. If, however, you're interested in eye-candy for marketing reasons, we have capability to create photo-realistic images and animations as needed.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. As owner/founder, I bring 23 year experience as a Sr. Technical Training Engineer supporting Manufacturing at Intel Corporation, where these technologies were tested on Technicians for equipment maintenance and operations. Intel continues to explore this technology, while I believe there are similar benefits for consumer products. The combination of Instruction Design and business opportunities provides that added leverage for identifying opportunities that affect the bottom line. The concept of Lean Manufacturing is extended beyond the delivered product through to the consumer. There is literally no data among Lean experts that quantify the benefits of reduced waste once delivered to the consumer, so our goal is to extend this to new opportunities not yet realized. It's this added value and wide-open opportunity that get's me personally excited!

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. "How much does it cost" is paramount. I typically quote on the job based on what CAD data you currently have along with the complexity of new 3D models required but are missing. Much of the new models can be legally taken from existing models on Google or Turbosquid libraries, so there is typically little to create from scratch and that savings is passed on to you. We under-commit and over-deliver. All past customers were extremely satisfied, and there is never a surprise when you receive your bill.

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. First, there's a huge difference between media developers and those that determine the right media based upon the problem statement. I am very technical with a BS in Electrical Engineering Technology, with decades of experience in performance analysis and solutions at Intel. So I constantly discover new things in this field that sets us apart from other media developers. For example, many graphics artists (like myself) are left handed. So we want to animate assembly procedures for the left-handed world (objects coming in from the left). However, 90% of the population is right-handed, so I intentionally rotate the scene for the right-handed audience. So how did I discover this... through experimentation of Lego assembly procedures on test subjects. There was a noted improvement in comprehension when I flipped the animation. Next time you look at illustrations or technical media, you may be surprised by what you see!

Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?

A. We develop instructional videos for Corel's latest technical illustration tools - offered in multiple languages. Corel has packaged Right Hemisphere 3D software in their advanced suite of tools. We are also Beta testers for the latest versions of Right Hemisphere tools.

Q. Describe your most recent project, what it involved, how much it cost, and how long it took.

A. The last project addressed a real problem having to do with technique or method of installing a new belt. The animation (available on YouTube) was quite simple. The client didn't have any CAD data, but the objects were very simple (conveyor belt repair involving a hose and basic tools). The total billed was only $750 and included several images (from the animation) to clarify the procedure for print. In the end, it took almost a week to complete. This was a steal for the client, but work is work and this was such a good use case for Visual Instructions to help promote the benefits. The client is currently gathering data on the reduced number of service calls as a result of this media.
