- What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
I wish customers knew more about the difference between a TRUE detailer and what we call a 'hack' detailer..which is someone who carries the title but does not do the proper work to be called one. To me the difference between the two is the difference between a fast food place and a 5 star restaurant. Yes both serve 'food', but the quality difference between them is HUGE. One takes time, preparation and passion, the other is just a quick 'in, out and get paid' type of situation. Yes, we charge more than the corner car wash, but as the old saying goes: "You get what you pay for." With us, you get what you pay for and then some. We consider ourselves to be of the 5 star category. Sure, the quick car wash will make your car 'clean', but the price you pay from them using heavy degreasers, extremely stiff bristled brushes and drying towels that they just used on the mud covered truck that came before you HEAVILY outweighs the 'benefit' of it being quicker. Heavy degreasers can dull finishes, not just on your paint, but your plastic trim, metal/chrome/aluminum rims and window tint. Stiff brushes leave hairline scratches all over your paints finish (what we call swirl marks) and using unfit drying cloths can also scratch and mar your paint. We on the other hand have specific cleaners for specific surfaces. Paint, rims, plastic, tires and so on all have their own specific cleaners. Interiors of vinyl, plastic, cloth and leather also have their own designated cleaners and conditioners. Simple things such as our technique of washing top to bottom (rather than getting our wash mitts dirty with the grime on the bottom, then transferring it to the top), using the 'two bucket method' (one bucket rinse, one bucket wash water) and always working with clean and fresh wash mitts and drying towels ensures that no accidental scratches or 'swirls' will happen on our time with your car. Also, I wish people knew that just because someone uses a 'buffer' doesn't mean they are a professional. A buffer, specifically a rotary buffer, in the wrong hands can do WAY more damage than good. Detailing is not a 'rush job' type of thing but many people think that 'time is money' so the faster they finish the more money they'll make...and that's all that matters. We know you care about your car, why else would you hire us? And we care about our customers and what matters to them...so though we may not finish the fastest...we will finish the job the right way and be sure our customers are satisfied. In closing, be careful who you entrust your baby with with. You spent thousands, sometimes 10's of thousands of dollars to purchase it. Does it really make sense to save a few bucks by giving it to someone who is only looking to do the fastest job possible and 'good enough' is their standard? I hope you consider these things the next time you go to have your car washed, detailed or serviced in any way.
