Self representation has traditionally been called professional per legal representation; instead of hiring a personal lawyer to represent you, you are representing yourself in court.

According to National Center on State Courts in 1991-92, 71 percent of domestic relations (family law) legal cases had at least one unrepresented party. In 18 percent, both parties were pro se lawyers. Both around the country and here in Arizona, the number of individuals deciding to represent themselves is on the rise.

Why? According to 1996 information on pro se by the Law School in the University of Maryland:

* 57% of self-representing parties said they could not afford it
* 21% said they thought their case was simple and they didn't need an attorney
* 45% of self-representing parties believe that attorneys are more concerned with their own promotion than their customers' best interest�

The right to represent one's self comes from the United States constitution. Though, the legal system isn't set up to permit pro per litigants to totally represent themselves. Non-lawyers can't possibly gain expertise on the rules of evidence, courtroom procedure, civil procedure, case law and statutes.
