{Stylist} Heather Sanders, founder of The ReStyle Group is passionate about making design approachable and fun. She focuses on helping clients transform (or in many cases, finish) the spaces they live in. Her philosophy differs from traditional design: she rarely ditches everything, instead working around what the client owns and loves, hunting for a combination of high style and low cost options creating the desired ‘look for less’. Heather believes in an open team approach to any design plan and works closely with the homeowner providing them with access to all products and specifications so that they can implement the plan in their timeline.

She believes color is the main component of any transformation, will put fabric on every window if given the opportunity, never met an accessory she didn’t like and considers lighting to be the equivalent of jewelry. Design should be fun and flexible allowing for her vision to co-exist with the budget and needs of the family she is working with.

Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. Material selection: picking paint, counters, floors, lighting and such

Custom window treatments

One-day or use-what-you-have makeovers

Pantry, kid room organization

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Ask to see lots of pictures of past work. Be very clear on how they bill and when. Get or read some testimonials. Go with your gut...do you like them?

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Good taste is made but a good eye is born. We believe we are using our gifts combined with years of experience (and a good set of resources) to quickly and efficiently deliver a service that is of high value to those born w/out that eye.

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. You should have some idea of your preferred style. You should be open to change and suggestions. You should know which items can go and which must stay. Be prepared to send photos and do a pre-work assessment so we can clearly define goals and expectations. You must have some sort of a budget or range.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. interior redesign ( use-what-you-have & add-in a bit )

home staging ( for sellers and real estate agents, a MUST in this market )

one day makeovers ( you pick the room or combo of services, we’ll do it in a day )

paint & color ( expert eyes to pick new paint, fabric, or pull together a room with color )

accessories ( we never met an accessory we didn’t like )

windows & walls ( custom window treatments / bedding and wall displays )

holiday décor (meaningful, beautiful & creative holiday or party displays & set-up )

material selection & finishes ( counters, lighting, floors, fixtures, walls, cabinets )

(all on a budget, of course)

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. The ability to transform space and make houses into homes. We seriously can't believe we get paid to make things pretty. This is the best job ever!

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. Q: How do you charge?
A: By the hour. Most jobs require two ReStyle gals. Two sets of hands are better than one and we work twice as fast. With two designers, you get the combined benefit while still staying below the average per hour design rate.

Q: Do I have to adopt your style?
A: No way! It is about your home, your treasures and the look you want.

Q: What do you mean by budget?
A: That could mean anything from painting an item ourselves, re-purposing an item or choosing finishes that give you the look you want without breaking the bank.

Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?

A. We never met a project we didn't like.

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. What you are paying for is our creative talents and resources: unique ideas and vision, out of the box suggestions, trusted vendors and hot spot resources.

If you call us in, we will deliver ideas that you would not otherwise see. We are a fresh set of eyes with bold creativity and budget friendly solutions.

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. Read our bios on the blog www.restyleblog.com but the short is we have a renovation addiction meets real estate flipping and staging background. When the market shifted, we followed our hearts.

Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.

A. We just did a quick redesign for a family with no extra budget. In a few hours, we were able to move things around, re-position accessories and art they owned and re-purpose their other items. The homeowner was so excited...she cried. That was pretty cool!

Q. If you were advising someone who wanted to get into your profession, what would you suggest?

A. Have you been hearing "Why aren't you doing design as a profession for years?" Do you have a serious love for all things home? If so, do your research and consider it as a career.
