The owner and certified head instructor of the Phoenix school is a 4th Degree Black Belt holder, Robert Gardner. Sifu Robert began his Shaolin martial arts training in 1996, and is the only one in the Phoenix area duly certified by the Shaolin Grandmaster and Elder Masters to teach Shaolin Kung-Fu. Sifu Robert continues to train and advance towards 5th Degree Black Belt Associate Master level with new, more complex, and more challenging material.

His goal in the Phoenix area is to pass on the knowledge, enthusiasm, and love of the Shaolin Art the way it is presented to him by Elder Masters David and Sharon Soard and Grandmaster Sin Kwang The himself.

Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. If you are looking for a good kung fu or martial arts school,

1) Ask about their lineage, or where their material comes from. Most martial arts today are younger than 100 years old.
2) Observe or try out a class if you can. That way you'll have a good idea about things before signing up or making any long-term commitments.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. We are the only school in the area teaching EVERYTHING that was taught in the ancient Shao-Lin Temples in China and under the direction of the one and only Shao-Lin Grandmaster, Sin Kwang The'. That includes the meditation as well as the kung fu. And with over 900 different forms of training to teach, there is something for everyone from age 12 all the way to age 75!

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. I personally love to watch students succeed at something that they originally thought too difficult to even consider before. It gives them the confidence to succeed in their other areas of life.

I also enjoy being part of the preservation of a 1500 year old way of life, thinking, and philosophy that was almost extinguished in the mid-20th century in mainland China. It is knowledge and material that has real, concrete value for health, fitness, self-defense, increased mental focus, self-esteem, confidence, and martial arts skill and ability. Not many businesses have the pleasure of saying that about their services.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. 1) What do you teach?

The purpose of the school is to preserve the Shao-Lin heritage and tradition and offer those traditional and time-tested self-defense techniques to others who have always wanted authentic kung fu and tai chi training but have never had the chance before.

3) Are your classes suitable for beginners?

Yes. The curriculum is designed for people who have had no training before. If you have trained in other martial arts in the past, well, you move at your own pace. So you may advance more rapidly than others who have had no previous experience.

4) What if I'm not very flexible, or am really out of shape?

As with all physical activities, you should pay attention to your own body and move within your own natural limitations. Your flexibility and overall fitness will increase over time as you consistently attend classes and train.

5) My doctor recommends some kinds of stretching and exercise. Can I do Shao-lin?

Many experts today encourage activity to keep us young and flexible. We have passive conditioning classes, breathing exercises that build and continue on to more involved classes, such as Tai Chi Chaun.

6) What kind of mental training might I expect?

Most students comments that Shao-lin provided so much more than they expected! In addition to the physical training and conditioning, mental conditioning is also emphasized. Correct breathing techniques are taught, as well as, forms (katas) which are an excellent way for the brain to learn new patterns - Learned information. Experts say this is critical in achieving a healthy mind and body as we get older.

7) Is there a specific time in the class cycle when I should start my training?

No! Students WORK at their OWN PACE and new students can JOIN at ANYTIME.

8) I'm over 40 - can I do Shao-lin?

YES! We have many students from all walks of life interested in getting in better physical and mental shape. Students that cannot participate in particular areas of conditioning have an abundance of other material that will help get and keep you in shape!

9) Is Shao-lin Kung Fu suitable for women?

Absolutely, we have many women in the art, various ages and rank. Besides learning the self defense aspect, the conditioning and mental training ensure a long, healthy life!. The techniques developed in Shao-lin Kung Fu were designed for a smaller practitioner to defeat a larger more powerful attacker through superior skill, strategy and technique. Studying Shao-lin is the perfect preparation for a woman seeking effective and universal self-defense skills. In fact, the founder of Wing Chun, the style of Kung Fu that Bruce Lee studied, was a Shao-lin nun.

10) What about kids!?

For children the recommended age is 12 years old, however, we will allow a student as young as 9 or 10 yrs old if an older sibling or parent joins with them. We suggest that you do 1 or 2 trial classes before enrolling a youngster under 12 to make sure it will really be a good fit for them. Kung Fu is a great family activity!

Testimonials

6 months ago a friend referred me to the Chinese Shaolin Kungfu Center and I am grateful to her! In that time I have seen a very noticeable improvement to my overall health and fitness. I appreciate the work-at-your-own-pace attitude coupled with the encouragement to challenge myself. As a female in the class, I feel safe and respected. There's a good sense of camaraderie at the studio and everyone is willing to help one another out--we're all learning together.

Shifu Robert is knowledgeable, skilled and truly invested in seeing his students succeed. He is always available to answer questions, give background information to round out your understanding of the form, walk you through demonstrations, even recommend kungfu books and films. The best teachers are also the best students. Shifu continues to add to his own martial skills and it's encouraging to have a teacher who will sweat along side of you.

The Chinese Shaolin Kungfu Center holds closely to traditional Shaolin forms, philosophy and culture which you can read about in a number of reputable texts. This, for me, adds an extra layer of interest and legitimacy to the school. You’re not just going to learn to punch and kick, but you will understand the whys and hows underlying the forms which is critical if you want a true and deep sense of the art.

In short, I’d recommend the Chinese Shaolin Kungfu Center. It’s great for your health--great fun!--and offered by a reputable instructor at a reasonable cost.

This center for martial arts is one of the best in Phoenix! Sifu Robert Gardner teaches the 1500 year old martial art of Shaolin Kung Fu with patience and positive encouragement.

Since I have started my Shaolin Warrior training in July 2010, I have no become bored with the training as I learn something new ever class. The center is also overseen by the one and only Grandmaster Sin Kwang Thé, sole grandmaster of the whole Shaolin art, which is impressive in itself!

Sifu Robert is an excellent teacher. The first class I took from him not only made me want to come back but made me excited about learning more. From his demonstrations you trust in his skill and ability to do the material, in other words he's a good example on how the moves are supposed to be done. If you stick with this martial art and begin to advance, Sifu will be right there with you and let you know how far you've come. Overall if you like the Shao-Lin art you will want to go to class to improve but you'll also want to go because Sifu makes it so much fun!
