Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.
A. We provide mathematics tutoring in every math topic/subject for all ages.
To prepare students for college level mathematics and future career choices we also incorporate deductive reasoning and critical thinking into every tutoring session.
Deductive reasoning is more commonly taught in reading but the concepts of applied logic, reasoning, and engaging in problem solving are important factors in mathematics comprehension
as well!
Every critical thinking exercise is uniquely selected for each student's level of comprehension. We work towards providing a challenging and enriched experience for all students.
Q. Describe three recent jobs you've completed.
A. Currently working with several students from middle school to high school in areas ranging from 6th grade math to geometry. In addition to mathematics tutoring students work on applied mathematics projects as a means to engage in math while learning more about their favorite things!
Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A. If you're seeking a "tutor" who will work with you or your child to overcome issues in mathematics and help you/your child to gain an appreciation for math while making improvements, then Kelly Miller Math Institute is the place to be!
Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?
A. I've realized in the 2nd year of my business that there is nothing about me that has changed in my 12+ years as a tutor. I'm the same tutor at 35 who worked with college students at 21. I don't give answers and I don't expect miracles to happen the day before an exam. However, now that I own my own business I am A LOT MORE FUN!
I absolutley LOVE to work the problems with the student. I photo copy their worksheet, buy their books off amazon, and I get my noggin knocked around with them. That's what makes me stand out... I really do understand how "crazy their teacher is ", "how completly horrible math is" or even how much "this assignment sucks" (excuse me parents but that's what they say). Needless to say it is VERY imporant for each student to know that their tutor is ON THEIR SIDE and WORKING HARD TOO.
Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?
A. I hold a B.S. in mathematics and statistics, a Master's in Public Health with a concentration in biostatistics, and I am currently a PhD candidate (ABD) in epidemiology.
I have worked as a math tutor, math instructor, and mentor over the last 12 years with students of all ages. My personal goal with each student is to ensure they receive a healthy mix of tutoring and fun with math.
Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?
A. My continuing education comes in the form of the acutal job. If you're really tutoring then you must receive continuing education everday! Thus the joy and challenge in the job. I love to have my brain teased in math topics that I haven't touched in some time. I feel quite capable but sometimes I can be challenged and it's fun! Now if I can only get the kids to see it that way!
I also write a newsletter. Our newsletter is a place for kids to select a topic or submit something of interest to them. For me, it's a great editorial platform for current events and interesting topics in math and science. Often times I will stay posted on the latest developments through the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics as I look for items to add to the newsletter and website.

Q. What is your greatest strength?
A. My dedication and passion for math education is one of my greatest strengths. I want every student to find their place in mathematics and gain confidence in their ability to truly comprehend math. I am a firm believer in the ideal view that -- with math on your side, you can conquer everything and become anything.
