Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.
A. I provide mathematics tutoring in every math topic/subject for all ages.
To prepare students for college level mathematics and future career choices I also incorporate deductive reasoning and critical thinking into every tutoring session.
Deductive reasoning is more commonly taught in reading but the concepts of applied logic, reasoning, and engaging in problem solving are important factors in mathematics comprehension
Every critical thinking exercise is uniquely selected for each student's level of comprehension. We work towards providing a challenging and enriched experience for all students.
Q. Describe three recent jobs you've completed.
A. Currently working with several students from middle school to high school in areas ranging from 6th grade math to geometry. In addition to mathematics tutoring students work on applied mathematics projects as a means to engage in math while learning more about their favorite things!
Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A. If you're seeking a "tutor" who will work with you or your child to overcome issues in mathematics and help you/your child to gain an appreciation for math while making improvements, then working with me is your best choice!
Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?
A. I really do take the time to communicate with my students and observe how they work in their "math" environment. Rather than giving a student an assessment test at our first meeting I prefer to talk with each student and find our what their perceptions are about their coursework, the class instructor, assignments and exams, and what the they perceive as weaknesses and strengths.
Over several sessions I observe problem solving patterns, study behaviors, and overall comprehension of each student. Through communication and observation I'm able to make suggestions for the the best approach to take in tutoring to improve grades and to help my students improve their study habits.
I absolutely LOVE to work through problems with students. I photo copy their worksheet, buy their books off amazon, and I get my noggin knocked around with them. That's what makes me stand out... I really do understand how "crazy their teacher is ", "how completely horrible math is" or even how much "this assignment sucks" (excuse me parents but that's what they say). Needless to say it is VERY important for each student to know that their tutor is ON THEIR SIDE and WORKING HARD TOO.
Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?
A. I hold a B.S. in mathematics and statistics, a Master's in Public Health with a concentration in biostatistics, and I am ABD (PhDc) in epidemiology.
I have worked as a math tutor, math instructor, and mentor over the last 14 years with students of all ages. My personal goal with each student is to ensure they receive a healthy mix of tutoring and fun with math.
Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?
A. My continuing education comes in the form of the actual job. As you tutor you receive continuing education everyday! Thus, the joy and challenge is inherent in my job. I love it when my students set out to teach me or challenge me in completing as many problems as I can, if not more or faster. I applaud them for teaching the tutor!
Q. If you have a complicated pricing system for your service, please give all the details here.
$30/hr (K-5), $35/hr (6-8), $40/hr (9-12), $45(College), $65/hr (ACT/SAT Exam Prep)
Q. What is your greatest strength?
A. My dedication and passion for math education is one of my greatest strengths. I want every student to find their place in mathematics and gain confidence in their ability to accomplish math. I am a firm believer in the ideal view that -- with math on your side, you can conquer everything and become anything.
