Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. It is important to meet the owner of the business and the pet sitter who will be providing service and to feel good about them as people as well as introducing them to your pets to make sure they like them too. Also be sure to hire a company who is professional and who is licensed, bonded and insured. Check out references from other families who have received services from this company. Trust your instincts and check in on the sitter while you are away. For the first time using the company, it is best to use them for a short stay and to see how your pets and home are when you return.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Most people in the pet sitting industry are there because they enjoy and love caring for animals. It is a treat for them to meet and get to know new pets. And they want to do the best service they can for the pets. It is also important to hire pet sitters who are licensed, bonded and insured and to work with a professional company. Be sure you feel good about the owner and the pet sitter and check in with them while you are away. Also be sure that your pets like and feel comfortable with your sitter.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. Is this a professional pet sitting company? Are you licensed, bonded, and insured? How many years have you been in business? Do you have references that I can call? Can I meet with the owner and the pet sitter before leaving? Can I be in touch with my pet sitter at any time I am away? What are your general policies and procedures? What other affiliations with animals and pets do you have? What are your procedures if my pet has a medical issue or a medical emergency? Will you call me if you have any questions? Will you call my emergency backup family member, neighbor or friend if you cannot reach me? What are your policies if I do not have cell service to let you know I am delayed in returning from my trip? What are your policies for refund if I return home early?
