Thumbtack Partners with Sequoia to Reimagine Local Services

Plumber fixing kitchen sink

Today we are thrilled to announce our partnership with Sequoia Capital in our quest to transform the market for local services! Sequoia, along with our prior investors Javelin Venture Partners and MHS Capital, has invested $12.5 million to fuel our growth. We’re also excited to have Bryan Schreier from Sequoia joining our board.

In a time when you can order any product you can think of with one click, it makes no sense that it’s still so hard to hire a plumber. This is the problem we obsess about, and over the last four years we’ve been working relentlessly to develop technology to save people time and money and bring skilled service pros more work.

We’re doing for the local services industry what eBay and Amazon did for the retail industry — hiring a service pro will forever be easier, faster, and better.

It’s an enormous opportunity. U.S. consumers spend $670 billion each year on local services, and service pros spend $80 billion a year on marketing. The big names — Angie’s List, Yelp and Craigslist — are all modeled on old, offline paradigms (directories and classifieds), and the time is ripe for a completely new solution.

That’s why we’re building Thumbtack.

At Thumbtack we believe that consumers shouldn’t have to spend an afternoon blindly calling a list of phone numbers just to find the right pro. And service pros should have a better advertising solution than just buying impressions, clicks, or no-promise subscriptions.

Thumbtack is doing things differently. We get consumers quotes from qualified pros who are available when you need them. For free. We want to be the place you go when you need a wedding photographer, home remodeler, or math tutor.

Our approach is working: 250,000+ service pros in all 50 states across every type of service you could think of use Thumbtack to find work. We’re currently generating $300 million a year in new business opportunities for our local pros.

We’re just getting started. Thumbtack is already the best place to hire any kind of service pro, but our accomplishments still pale in comparison to our ambition. We’re eager to continue to improve Thumbtack for pros and consumers alike, and accelerate our growth so that we can reach millions more.

To that end, we want to hire talented and hungry individuals who are interested in tackling hard, meaningful problems and working with great people. If you’re curious about joining a startup that is hitting its stride, check out our open positions — we’d love to chat with you!
