About
I am credentialed in life science and chemistry, but I also have experience teaching and tutoring Algebra. I taught chemistry and honors chemistry for several years. I have also taught biotechnology at the high school level. Students tend to appreciate that I guide them through thinking. I won't just show them an answer and move on; I will ask them questions until they can show me how to solve the problem. I am patient with students and want them to learn how to embrace mistakes as learning opportunities.

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

If I tutor one on one with a student in algebra or geometry, I ask for $30 an hour. Since I am credentialed to teach science, I ask for $40 an hour for science classes.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I continuously do continuing education. I am in the process of shifting my teaching to the virtual world. I'm currently a student with Boise State University's EDTECH program online.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Look for someone who is patient with students and sincerely wants to see them succeed. Ideally the tutor not only knows the content, but also knows how to make it accessible to the student. For me it is more important that I can get the student to understand the information than having him or her be aware of how many factoids I know. Be aware of people who may have excellent grades but do not know how to relate to someone who struggles with acquiring knowledge.
