Introduction: I offer dog training, puppy classes, private training, boarding and training, and phone consultations. I have been involved with dogs for over 20 years in a variety of capacities. Mike has performed approximately 15,000 in-home behavioral consultations covering the entire spectrum of dog behavior, from the mundane to the bizarre. I am also an author and lecturer. I teach classes, run a small boarding and training operation, and have occasionally trained other trainers. My training approach focuses on channeling a dog's natural drives and instincts into behaviors acceptable in the human pack, primarily through the principles of positive reinforcement, as well as through methods that appeal to the dog's canine sensibilities. I have been certified as an expert on dog behavior by the California Superior Court and do occasional work evaluating dogs in legal matters. I have been featured on Fox 5 Television's "Good Day New York", San Francisco's Channel 7 News, Animal Planet, as well as other television and radio programs nationwide. I have also been featured in major national magazines, including Fit Pregnancy (dogs and babies), Dog World, and Boston Whaler (dogs on boats), and am currently a regular contributor to The American Dog Magazine, a national publication with a circulation of 800,000. I was recently interviewed by National Geographic Magazine. In February 2006, he spoke at the annual conference for California's animal care and control organizations. Finally, I have trained dogs for high-profile celebrities in the entertainment and financial worlds, including Charles Schwab, Robin Williams, Barry Levinson, Joe Satriani, Bob Weir, Linda Ronstadt, Kirk Hammet (Metallica), and Michael Tilson Thomas, who commented that "Michael Wombacher is a maestro of dog trainers. His clarity of thinking, sense of humor, and skills in communicating make dog training fun for both pet and pet lover."

FAQs

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Look for someone who has a multitude of approaches to deal with any training situation. Beware of people who say "I only do this" and "I never do that." They are generally more interested in their training philosophy than in helping you. A good trainer will have a broad range of tricks in their bag.
