Heritage Custom Carpentry & Remodel (formerly Creative Design) is owned and operated by husband and wife David and Barbara Dean. With David's 10 years backing them up, they started Heritage Custom in 1995 as a small handyman company, serving local neighborhood homeowners. In 2000, they became licensed general contractors, and Heritage Custom Carpentry & Remodel was put on the map.

I have known Dave and Barbara Dean for well over 10 years. The quality of their work is better than any other general contractor in the business. Attention to quality and customer satisfaction is the highest priority. I have worked with Dave as a coworker and a sub contractor on many jobs and he is a true professional that this industry is currently lacking. Family values transfer to his business practice.

Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. Bath remodels Fireplace mantels and bath vanities

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Make sure they have plenty of experience. Just because someone says they are a carpenter/remodeler doesn't mean they are.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. What are some different products available to build with or use in my home.

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. Exactly what they want to have done. They don't necessarily need designs but a list of all work they need. This will help with any surprise costs down the line. I found that some contractors can gouge customers with add on.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. We pay attention to detail. We are very passionate about we do and our level of service and craftsmanship stands out above the rest. 30 years combined experience

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. The freedom of creativity. We consider ourselves artists and we get to create items not found anywhere else.
We get to do something for a living that many people do for a hobby.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. "Is she really a carpenter" (meaning my wife Barbara, we work as a team). My answer is always YES.

Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?

A. We were remodeling a show home in South Laguna Beach. One of the last days of the job someone came to visit the owner of the home. They liked our work so much they featured us in the publication he worked for, Architectural digest.

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. Perfection takes time to get right.

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. It started as a hobby when I was ten years old. I realized I was pretty good at it. Many people started purchasing what I made. I realized early on that one must really like what they do for a living because they are going to be doing it for a very long time.

Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.

A. Remodeled the lobby of a very famous comedy club. We designed and built all the cabinetry and display cases.

Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?

A. I attend many home shows and lectures. Many companies offer product seminars.

Q. What are the latest developments in your field? Are there any exciting things coming in the next few years or decade that will change your line of business?

A. Many products are continuously being developed that are greener and safer and are just so much better for the environment and ourselves. No I will not be leaving this line of business.

Q. Describe your most recent project, what it involved, how much it cost, and how long it took.

A. 2 book shelves with upper cabinets and kitchen island. $8,400. 00 1 month.

Q. If you have a complicated pricing system for your service, please give all the details here.

A. We price our jobs on 2 factors, material and level of technicality to build. That's pretty much it. In the case of bath remodels, size and fixture cost.

Q. If you were advising someone who wanted to get into your profession, what would you suggest?

A. Get as much experience as possible before going at it on your own.

Q. Write your own question and answer it.

A. Would I encourage people to get into this line of work?
Yes, because the world will always need carpenters and if your good the design possibilities are endless and you are involved with a very old profession.
