Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Seek assistance from an experienced practitioner. Look for authenticity and integrity. Be open to changed thinking.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. People make the difference. Create a "green" organic environment that encourages and engages people to do their best work. Support their development.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. Will you take the time to understand my business and tailor your services to my needs? Do you have practical experiences to share?

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. Read my books "Creating an Environment for Successful Projects," "Creating the Project Office," "Project Sponsorship," and "The Complete Project Manager" (forthcoming).

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. Covers why, what, AND how. Interactive style encourages the exploration of action-oriented practices that are immediately applicable. Incorporates multimedia to discover concepts lurking everywhere that may be adopted, adapted, and applied. Believes in an organic approach to the implementation of project management, recognizing that nature and natural living systems provide many answers to complex scenarios. Merges concepts with real life experiences--the results are memorable interventions that transform how individuals approach their work. Randy's insights and style “bring the concepts from way up there, to right down here, equip you with the tools, and empower you to act.”

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. Everyday is a good day, especially when I learn something and have fun. Projects should be fun and exist in a "green", not "toxic" enviironment. I like helping people create green working relationships.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. Q: How can I influence upper managers who seem to make my job so difficult?
A: Take the initiative to manage up the organization. Ask questions about strategy, vision, why projects were chosen, what criteria were used, how will success be measured. Make it your responsibility to mentor and coach upwards. Take accountability for overall business success, not just to get assigned tasks done. Demonstate sincere interest in getting results that count.

Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?

A. By teaching online courses for the University of California Irvine Extension, I get contant updates from working professionals about the challenges they face. I also get them to share their stories about leadership traits they've found particularly effective for influencing them. These experiences keep me "grounded" in the realities of today's project world and provide hope that good things are happening.

I also do in person seminars world-wide that keep me interfacing with learners in various cultures. I also read extensively.
