Performing fun covers and great originals, Kyle Van Band makes it look easy.

In addition to having great original songs, Kyle's a good mimic and can sing just like Willie Nelson, Bono, Roy Orbison, David Bowie, Tom Petty, Elvis Presley, David Byrne, Mark Knopfler (of Dire Straits), and many more.

New listeners often become fans who then become customers, booking us for parties, private events, and gigs. They love the way we provide good music for all occasions, tailoring set lists and instrumentation for each venue and attendees.

Great vocals, catchy tunes, and experienced musicians make it easy for us lift the spirits of any crowd. We've headlined the Whisky-a-Go-Go, The Lighthouse Cafe, and nearly 100 other Southern California venues.

We do 30-50 shows per year, so we've always got the chops. We're on time, have our own PA, and ready to Rock Cajun Irish Country!

Question and answer

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Wow!

If I told you the secrets, they wouldn't be secrets anymore.

I thought about this one for a while and actually wrote out a good response but didn't save it.

Oops.

If someone wants my advice, just ask.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. We play to the crowd, playing dance-friendly rhythms that span the ages, from the 1920s to 2010.

All ages can get up and have fun, but we're even better in a honky-tonk setting.

Our current cover list includes: Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, U2, Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, The Traveling Wilburys, The Pogues, Van Morrison, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Pixies, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Old Crow Medicine Show, Chuck Berry, Faces, AC/DC, Queen, Bob Marley, T-Rex, David Bowie, Talking Heads, Talk Talk, Cyndi Lauper, The Pretenders, Stray Cats, Sam Cooke, Elvis Presley, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Soggy Bottom Boys, Eddie Vedder, The Doobies, The Allmans, Concrete Blonde, Counting Crows, Crowded House, Bruce Hornsby, and more!

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. I love singing to the audience and dancing while I play guitar.

As a band, we love helping people cut loose and mix up familiar songs with new ones, giving folks a chance to experience something new in a fun setting.

We like to mix up the kinds of tunes we do so people who like different kinds of dances can try them all out or just wait for their favorite. Dance styles we play to besides rock and cajun conga lines include: two steps, waltzes, one steps, line dances, soul, blue grass, celtic caelidhs, rockabilly, and shuffles.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. People often ask us if we know this one song....

If you're a musician, you're probably laughing. If you're not, well let me explain. The best time to make a request isn't as the band is getting back on the stage from a break. Nor is it right when they finish a rocking set.

The more advance notice you can give any group, the better. If you know you're going to be at a show and you want to hear something special, email us!

If it's just a dedication, of course that's easier. And there's always the chance that we or any band might know "that song" you're talking about, but planning ahead gives you at least a 50% better chance.

Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?

A. The first time we played a biker rally, I had two musicians show up in shorts and sandals. I was a little bit worried at first, simply because theses guys were timid of the leather-clad audience and came from a jazz background.

But I was confident in our drummer and in the set list I'd prepared for the event. We had a good stage with ample electricity and a big crowd.

Things got a little unruly just before we went on when the opening act got a little shy. I noticed their singer avoided eye-contact with the audience and so I made a point to walk around the venue, introducing myself to various club members with a firm handshake and good eye contact.

When we came on, I made a point of connecting on stage with all the folks I'd just met and played some songs that they'd requested. We ended up winning over the whole show and have returned to play for that club and others.
