The newspaper and television are overstating their negative histories about hiring someone on craigslist, not everybody here are criminals.

Protect yourself. I know most ads on craiglist look like legit companies, but there are 3 easy steps to find out who is real, and who may make you loose your home.

Step 1: Ask for their California state licensed board number (any job over $500 requires a license). If they have no license, it is likely they are not experts on their field, or they could not pass a criminal background check, which is required for obtaining a license.

Step 2: Once you know the license number, go to the CSLB web site, and check for workers company insurance. California law requires every contractor that has employees, helpers, etc., to pay insurance. If they don't, their employees can fake an injury, and sue you, and if you have no money, the law will allow them to go after your assets, home, cars, boats etc.

Step 3: Once you know if they are licensed and insured, get free reviews from independent companies like The Better Business Bureau. Get a free report from any installer or company in the bay area. Just type in their phone number in or Angie's list.
