Introduction: ONLINE/REMOTE LESSONS Or San Diego Locals only! —————————————————————— HI! I'm Matt. I'm an award-winning, conservatory-trained pianist, composer, producer, and educator out of Los Angeles 🎶 Though I am a music professor at Occidental College 🤓, I enjoy teaching all ages and levels -- from aspiring beginners and music undergrads to consummate professionals and performing artists alike. I develop custom-tailored lesson plans based on the students' unique goals & prior experience -- this includes popular genres such as classical, jazz, pop, and R&B. I can help you learn improvisation, sight-reading, music production, ear training, and audio engineering. Lessons are always simple, rewarding, and most importantly, fun! This is especially important if you're looking to play music instead of trudge through method-books! 🤗 For online Zoom lessons, multiple camera angles accurately resemble the hands-on experience of an in-person lesson (see pics below). *I offer a free 20 min consultation to ensure your satisfaction with the applicable technology 👨‍💻 As a performer, I've worked and toured with some of the best -- the stars of "American Idol", "Glee", and "The Voice,” REO Speedwagon, and Engelbert Humperdinck. A myriad of notable jazz all-stars including Kamasi Washington, Clare Fischer, Bill Watrous, Eric Marienthal, and Zane Musa 🎹 My compositions can be heard in a multitude of media platforms, from various tv commercials, feature films like Big Momma's House III, various movies on The Lifetime Network, and television shows such as “Bones", “Millionaire Matchmaker" and MTV's "10 on top" 🎧 Music has been the passion of my life since I was 4 years old. It is my honor and privilege to share it with you! Please message me with any questions and I look forward to meeting you!

Matt is very patient. He is encouraging and teaches by telling and showing you how to make corrections. I would recommend him to others wanting to take piano lessons. ---Judy Fitzgerald

Working with Matt has been a genuine pleasure. He's a brilliant musician and has greatly helped me to improve my skill as a jazz pianist. I had doubts about taking piano lessons virtually, but he absolutely knocks it out of the park with his setup. Our lessons have been fun, challenging, and laidback. I'm looking forward to continuing my lessons with Matt in the future.

Matt is a great teacher. He’s really good at getting my teenager out of his comfort zone and trying new things with the piano. Extremely knowledgeable and easy to work with. Highly recommend!

I’m so glad I started taking piano lessons with Matt - I’m painfully shy about playing in front of anyone, but I’m already improving my confidence and Matt is kindly giving guidance on what to practice (and how to undo years of bad habits)!

I was self taught for 3 years before deciding that it was time to look for a piano coach who could help me get where I am trying to go (with specifically jazz piano). I was hesitant at first because I wasn't sure about how lessons would be over zoom due to latency and the non-physical nature of it. After the first lesson I quickly realized that I had nothing to worry about because his whole setup is tailored to making sure he can communicate with piano easily over video. His use of software is fantastic and modern which I appreciate a lot. Matt is quick to answer any questions that I have at the start of each lesson and would gladly dive down a rabbit hole with me if that is where I was looking to go. He would also remind me when I would be diving down a rabbit hole and give me a heads up to help me regain focus on the main goal or adjust my heading if that is what I was looking for. He is incredibly skilled and has the resume to back it up. I appreciate that he is not afraid to get his hands dirty when explaining a concept by showing it in action and also guiding me through it using small steps so that it doesn't seem so daunting. I came to him with a picture in my head on what I wanted to practice but I actually found myself practicing things completely different but with his reassurance that it will lead me to where I am trying to go. It's still a bit early in my development time with Matt but I can confidently say that my outlook on piano has completely transformed over the short couple months that I have been taking lessons with him. I would absolutely recommend anyone else looking for some direction to try out a lesson if you are looking to evolve your playing and grow past self taught limitations!
