Michael Oyster is an experienced pianist and music educator with a background in classical music, jazz, blues and rock. He is now offering lessons to beginning and intermediate level students - adults, children and teenagers. His teaching method offers a unique blend of traditional music education, theory and improvisation.
Mike is very patient and thorough and has put a lot of thought and energy into understanding the learning process and how to comfortably guide students of all levels through the learning process. His philosophy of teaching is based around amplifying what is right about the student's playing rather than focusing on mistakes. This results in a more confident performer and a more enjoyable learning experience.
Michael Oyster has played piano since the age of 5. Classically trained, he also played professionally in cover bands in the Washington D.C. area. An active performer as well as teacher he has performed in classical piano recitals recently at Palomar College and UCSD and also has performed at Dizzy’s with the Palomar College Jazz Ensemble. He is a member of the Music Teacher's National Association (MTNA).
