Introduction: I provide language skills to people who need to improve their reading, writing, speaking (presentation) and listening. I teach ESL to non-native speakers of English and test prep for SAT/ACT/IELTS and TOEFL exams.
My teaching is informed by the high expectations of all the students that I teach who I encourage to be independent and manage their own learning, while giving them the tools to progress and improve their language skills. Specifically these skills include the following:
* Building their confidence to them express themselves in English without fear of making mistakes
* Scaffolding their learning of English which involves keeping them in English and enabling them to process thought in English
* Teaching reading strategies to students whose written script does not use the Roman alphabet
* Guiding students on how to listen with greater acuity
* Encouraging earners to develop their thoughts in writing
* Progressing from constructing and linking sentences to paragraphs
For native English speakers who are preparing for tests, I believe in the following:
* Giving students the fundamental strategies they need to de-mystify reading
* Eenlightening students to actively use strategies to muster sentence completions
* emphasizing the value of strategies such as drawing inferences and locating the main idea
* Encouraging students to read critically and actively
* Advising students about effective ways to learn vocabulary items
* Showing students how to self-correct and be aware of the impact of the grammar they use
* Demonstrating how to improve paragraphs and be more concise in their writing and expression of ideas
I have been working at California State University, East Bay, where I have been guiding students towards achieving a greater understanding of reading strategies needed to de-mystify texts, preparing them for tests needed to enter university and indeed study at university by teaching them how to take effective notes during lectures.
