A. Don’t settle for a trainer who is limited to using only one method because they have a limited education or feel the need to pressure you to use what they prefer, because "they are the expert". A true behaviorist should have a knowledge of all training methods.

A. We estimate that 75% of professional dog trainers really don't know what they are doing. Unfortunately there are no state regulations or requirements to even becoming a dog trainer which means that anybody can make business cards tomorrow and call themselves a dog trainer without having any real knowledge of dog behavior to begin with. You cant afford to waste time or money on a dog obedience program that will not give you fast instant results. Or worse..make your dog worse off then before you even started working with a trainer.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. If they are well versed in all training methods. If they say no or try to avoid the question then avoid the trainer. Also ask if they can bring a demo dog to your consultation and provide distraction such as balls, toys, food and people. Then ask if they can show how much control of their dog off-leash they have. If the trainer wont let they're dog off-leash then the trainers dog is not trained.

A. Before spending your money on a dog trainer you must have the time to train your dog on a daily basis with the whole family. It is not fair to place the burden on one family member and expect the dog to listen to you by default.
