Meet the Business Owner: Tracy Kiggen
"I am originally from South Africa, where I had such a great childhood, that I yearned to help create special moments for others. I really love my job, and it is a valuable moment when you are done painting a face and see on a child's face that joy.
I too have a child. She will be celebrating her 4th birthday in June, and she is my life, my love, and my joy."
Question and answer
Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.
A. Web sites, paintings, and face painting for children.
Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A. Look at the work that the artist has done. Take prices and quality of work into consideration. I provide high quality work but have much lower than average prices.
Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?
A. I am the only face painter that uses the highest grade face paint which is made of all natural products such as avocado and chamomile. I really care about what goes on your skin as much as I do about my own skin.
Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?
A. How much of your budget is allocated for entertainment? How many children will be there?
I am also insured.
Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?
A. I am very detailed and highly creative. I enjoy doing art very much and therefore put in a lot of effort. This is evident in my work itself, as you can see the neatness and professionalism come out in the finished painting.
Q. What do you like most about your job?
A. I love meeting new people and putting smiles on their faces when the design is done.
Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?
A. Painting a pregnant belly was the most amazing experience I ever had. I could feel the baby moving inside while I painted a soccer ball on the mom's belly. I kept talking to the little growing life, and found it quite a spiritual experience.
Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?
A. I really care about people not only through my art but in nutrition as well. I am a very healthy person and have gained much knowledge about the correct way to eat, this is something I try to teach to others too.
I love children and gain a lot from my work with them. I have a 3 year old myself and I am a single mother.
Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?
A. I was born an artist and love my work very much. I do all sorts of creations from web site design: www.DivaLab.com to oil paintings.
Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.
A. One of my faces was recently chosen by David Lynch as a backdrop for a Duran Duran live performance in LA on March 23, 2011.
Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?
A. Yes, I read a lot from online publications to newsletters.
Q. What are the latest developments in your field? Are there any exciting things coming in the next few years or decade that will change your line of business?
A. The latest is air brushing but I find that you can't really get as detailed with the airbrush but the benefits are is that it is much faster.
Q. Describe your most recent project, what it involved, how much it cost, and how long it took.
A. Face painting for a sidewalk sale in Laguna Niguel. I was hired for 2 days to paint faces of random children in a shopping mall. I worked for 4 hours total and got paid $85/hour.
Q. If you have a complicated pricing system for your service, please give all the details here.
A. 1 Hour = $100
1.5 Hours = $140
2 Hours = $180
3 Hours = $270
If your event is going to run longer than 3 hours then I will calculate a set price so we are both happy. See all the details on my website: www.ARTovator.com
Q. If you were advising someone who wanted to get into your profession, what would you suggest?
A. Scope out your area and make sure there aren't too many face painters there already, as they have a reputation and will get chosen before you.
Q. Write your own question and answer it.
A. What sets you apart from other artists?
I am unique. I have a great sense of humor and I really love to entertain. My work is highly professional and speaks for itself. I also really, really love my job.
