Question and answer

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. This trade is particularly unique because there are about 300 companies that do some version of this type of work. What people don't know is that there are only about 6 companies that are fully licensed, bonded, and insured and can legally do the work. They all look legit and have professional looking websites, but they aren't doing the work legally. You really have to do your homework in this trade. Don't just ask them if they're licensed and insured. They all say yes. YOU HAVE TO CHECK! Remember, there is a reason they aren't licensed. They either lack the experience, have a criminal background, don't want to claim their income, or employ illegal aliens. Remember, you assume all liability when you hire an unlicensed contractor. If they fall off a ladder in your home, you're responsible. Check them out with the California contractor's state license board to be sure.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. We care about the details. We don't get as many jobs done in a day as a lot of companies out there, but our jobs are perfect. If a customer doesn't like something, we make it right- even if that means taking it apart and starting from scratch. We are not home theater line cooks. We are home theater chefs. We are critical of every detail down to the direction the screws point on a wall plate. When the installation is over, there isn't a limit as to how long we will spend with a homeowner teaching them how to use the system. We will stay as long as it takes and once we're gone, we can be reached directly from 8 am - 9pm for any service calls.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. Every job is different and the scenery always changes. I could never work in an office doing the same thin every day. I like that every job offers new challenges and new people to meet. I hear the craziest stories! It's fun to see how people end up where they are in life. Of course working with technology is always fun, but I think being out of an office meeting new people is better.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. Can you help us setup our home theater system?
We offer free in-home consultations to satisfy this need. First, we determine the customer's goals and needs then we pick the right audio/video receiver. That's the main piece of the project. From there we pick out speaker locations and then pick out the right speakers for the job. Every job and every customer is different so it's important to take the time to plan with them. This is a big purchase so the customer should also feel confident that they will get what they are paying for.

Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.

A. We installed a video wall for the San Diego Wild Animal park. It involved making 4 separate TVs appear as if they were one big screen. A video wall isn't too difficult to install but this one was unique. The wall was stucco, not drywall which made finding the studs difficult. It was also curved. To top it all off, they wanted it to pull off from the wall and tilt down. It turned out great but it was pretty tricky. Check out the pictures of it here at http://sdinstall.com/picpark3.html
