The client normally has a concept / shape / theme they wish to explore and the correct application of materials and finish should be discussed for the longevity of the work. Ask questions such as will the welds be viable, how will the finished work be treated before primer, what type of primer will be utilized and how many coats? What type of finish will be applied? We allow the client to explore the concept and make changes to the sketch then once accepted we use this full size sketch / drawling as our template.
