FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My prices are comparable to other professional copyeditors. I'm a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association, which lists editorial rates here: http://the-efa.org/res/rates.php. For both manuscript evaluations and editing, I ask for half of my fee up front and half upon completion. Manuscript evaluations cost $2.50/page, and include a written evaluation, a marked-up manuscript, and a phone conference about a week after delivery of the evaluation. Worth every single penny. Copyediting costs $5-$7.50/page; if I've done a manuscript evaluation on that book, you'll get the $5 rate. (Industry standard is 250 words per page.)
- What types of customers have you worked with?
Through my company, My Two Cents Editing, I work directly with novelists and nonfiction writers to get each manuscript into the best shape possible. My two-fold approach is to do a manuscript consultation first, then a copyedit before publication or submission to agents. With a manuscript consultation, I identify areas and avenues for improvement and submit a marked-up manuscript and a comprehensive written evaluation. When a manuscript is ready for copyediting, I give it two thorough goings-over, and offer post-editing cleanup services as well.
