I am a proofreader and editor in the Los Angeles area. My English skills are excellent, and I had a perfect score on the English section of the SAT. I graduated magna cum laude from Syracuse University, and I am very reliable.

When proofreading your materials, I will correct any errors and tidy your language without changing your style. I track all changes in Word so you can accept or reject every edit. Ask for references; my previous clients will tell you that I offer quick turn-around, I'm accessible by phone or email and I'm easy to work with.

Proofreading rates begin at $2.00 per page (industry standard = 250 words). Let's discuss what you need, and we can agree on a fixed rate for your project.

I look forward to working with you!

Stephanie Mitchell is a true professional, going above and beyond. She copyedited an early draft of my manuscript before I sent to agents. She not only did an excellent job, but she also completed the work early. I was so happy, I thanked her in the acknowledgments of my debut YA futuristic thriller, STARTERS, published by Random House. Thank you to thumbtack, as well.

The editor was attentive and completed the project ahead of schedule. She was very detailed in her comments and has great command of the written English language. I would hire her again in a heartbeat. Very professional from start to finish.

Question and answer

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. You need to know exactly what service a provider offers. Proofreading, line editing, copy editing, structural editing and developmental editing are all different services. When you look for a proofreader/editor, ask potential providers about the work they do -- do they simply correct grammar? Revise sentence structure? Give constructive criticism? Rewrite paragraphs that don't flow properly? When you know how a provider works, you can make an informed decision about whether to hire her.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. In terms of my work itself, I make it a priority to retain your voice and style in your writing. When editing a narrative, I have an intuitive understanding of how stories build and how characters develop, so I can help you identify places that need more oomph.
In terms of your experience working with me, you can reach me easily at almost any time, and I will answer any questions you have at any point in the process. I offer quick turn-around, and I track all the changes I make in Word, so you can see exactly what I have done.

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. After spending several years teaching and then some time writing, a proofreading/editing job dropped into my lap. While I was working on it, I discovered that I had a natural talent for this kind of work -- taking someone else's brilliant ideas and helping to clean up any messy language and strengthen any weak spots. Lifting your work from good to excellent is sincerely rewarding and, above all, fun!

Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.

A. I did the initial proofread and edit on a young adult novel that the author intended to shop to publishing houses. After working on the book with her and helping her fix grammatical errors and minor plot holes, I was thrilled when the author sold the book to Delacorte Press! It will be released in March of 2012.
