About Scott Associates

Scott Associates provides environmental design, planning, 3d modeling and rendering services to developers, realtors and homeowners who wish to fully understand and envision their dreams before committing to build.

I like the pursuit of projects that present a challenge and offer the potential for the development of exciting and compelling environments. It is not the size of a budget or the scale of the project that governs design approach, it's having the opportunity to work and collaborate with people of vision on the creation of unique design solutions that make the design process worthwhile.

I am completing the final stage of finished carpentry on a 324 sq.ft. post production audio home editing studio designed by Len Scott of Scott Associates. When first meeting with Len to discuss my concepts it was he who was able to conceive how we could effectively tie this new structure and a backyard entertainment patio area together into a free flowing space. Many difficult design issues were overcome in the planning stages, by the use of 3D design which revealed the patio and studio as a finished project. Although I served as the general contractor, it was Len who guided me through many stages from planning, to permit, to final inspection. Often times Len's ability to remain calm and light- hearted led us through some challenging moments. Without his expertise and attention to detail I would not have such a professional end result. Without Len's vision for our new entertainment space my wife would have never given me the "green light" to proceed with this huge project! David L. at KeepHerSmilingStudio 818-321-5786

Working with Len has been a pleasure! I have worked with him on several projects and have found him to be a strong team builder, a great team player and knowledgeable team leader. His vast experience and keen insight make him invaluable from the planning stage and design of a project through it's modeling and rendering. He is skillful, intuitive and a pleasure to work with. He listens well and I can rely on him to lend creative and technical input. The last project he worked on for us was for a new building material made from 100% recycled glass. He created renderings of the product installed in numerous applications that are so effective and look so appealing, that we are using them in our new marketing collateral. Len get's it, is always professional and consistently delivers products that exceed my expectations!

Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. Our most common projects are specialty design projects, residential expansions or remodels, decks, patios, product and furniture design, 3D modeling, rendering, and graphics.

It should be noted that there is no project that would be considered too small. They just have to provide a challenge or a problem worth solving.

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. It is important that you ask the kind of questions that allow you to get a good understanding of how you will be able to work in conjunction with the service provider. In design, the solutions often take some time, so you want to know that your input will be taken seriously and that you can feel comfortable that your directives, will be carefully assessed for incorporation into the project.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. I would wish to know and understand that design is a process that involves many stages and that the right solution comes only after looking at, testing and retesting options or directions before the appropriate answers are found. Keep in mind that if it is worth doing, it is worth doing right.

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. It is always best to have a good understanding of what your project goals and objectives are before you begin discussions with a service provider.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. Our method for presenting our work is based on the generation of computer generated 3D models of the work which can then be viewed in sketches and renderings that are easy for people who are not trained in reading architectural drawings or blue prints to fully visualize the project. It is an excellent way for our clients to see, understand and participate in the development of their dream concepts before they begin to build.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. The opportunity to work with people of vision and to help guide the designed transformation of people's dreams into reality is an extremely rewarding experience.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. Question: What do you think this will cost?
Answer: We need to totally understand what it is that your are wishing to do before we can estimate what the project costs might be.

Question: How long will the project take?
Answer: We need to totally understand what it is that your are wishing to do before we can estimate the complexity of the time frame for completion.

Question: What can you tell me about your work that would provide me with a comfort zone about contracting for your services?
Answer: As a client you should always try to become an integral part of the design process. Our design methodology ensures that your wishes and goals are fully incorporated into each stage of the project's developmental phases.

Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?

A. Form Follows Function, and Less is MORE, and if it is worth doing it is worth doing RIGHT!

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. I believe that we are blessed when we can truly enjoy the work we do each day, I know that being involved with design and the opportunity to be involved with the problem solving process will continue to be the driving force that will keep me motivated for years to come.

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. I knew at an early age that drawing and design would become a life long passion. It continues to be the driving force behind each work day. It's a wonderful thing when you can really enjoy what it is that you do with your life's work.

Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.

A. The rehabilitation of a 1930's commercial building in downtown Los Angeles. The project involved the incorporation of a new open metal exterior canopy and the total restoration of the building interior lobby and guard station. The completed project helped the building owners sell the property for nearly double their initial investment over a six year period.

A. The Green movement will continue to be play a major part in effecting the products and materials utilized in all of our environmentally sensitive projects.

Q. Describe your most recent project, what it involved, how much it cost, and how long it took.

A. The most recent project was the renovation of a 3 story, 45 unit, 1900's loft apartment complex, which included upgrading of the buildings exterior entry, corridors, lobbies and individual apartment units. The project cost is estimated to be just under $750,000 and is still in its' Phase 2 construction cycle. Completion of the project is expected by late 2011.

Q. If you have a complicated pricing system for your service, please give all the details here.

A. Services are provided on either an hourly or a contract basis. Hourly services may be required for initial preliminary design studies, or until such time as the complexity of the project can be effectively determined. Contracted service fees can then be evaluated and set in place on a project phase, by project phase basis.

Q. If you were advising someone who wanted to get into your profession, what would you suggest?

A. Working as a design professional can be extremely rewarding, but the profession should be carefully evaluated to insure that there will be sufficient future economic growth to support those with an interest in the field. It may be advisable to consult with a few current design professionals before selecting your course of action.

Q. Write your own question and answer it.

A. Question: What is your approach to design?
Answer: We don't presume to know what approach is going to be right for your particular requirement. We like to get to that answer with a lot of questions and an interactive teaming and partnering approach which include the development of 3D graphic information that allow you to easily see, understand and make choices about the design option being presented.
