Be clear about what you want and also be open to suggestions. Get priced up front. Be honest about what exactly you need done and what you expect. Most honest contractors like being directed/told what to do. But when the work process starts, let the magic happen. When it's done, go over and share any problems and/or concerns you might have. It's kind of like a haircut; touch-ups and alterations can be made.
