Question and answer
Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A. Hiring a Los Angeles magician can be a bit daunting, as there are many talented performers in the area. Start by taking it step by step. What kind of event do you have, and what type of magician would fit that event? Think about your needs -- what type of entertainment you are looking for, for how large of an audience, budget, etc. The more information you have, the better a seasoned professional can help you with a consultation. Check an entertainer's website for credits -- is he a Magic Castle magician, is he a full time professional or a dabbling hobbyist? If you're interested, actually call or e-mail the entertainer and start a conversation. That is a great start to seeing if that particular entertainer is right for you. Trust your gut from there.
Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?
A. There are a lot of magicians in Los Angeles, but all entertainers are the same. Think about your needs - what kind of magician are you looking for? A strolling close-up magician? A full-stage illusionist? Even Magic Castle magicians have different traits, genres, and styles of magic. Some are working professionals, others are part-time hobbyists. Don't make your decision solely on price! Because great entertainment is highly dependent on experience and past resume, the cheapest entertainer is usually not the best choice for your needs.
Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?
A. What type of entertainment do you offer? What is your personal approach to your craft? What are your travel arrangements, needs, and additional fees associated with bringing your show to my event? Is there any location where I can see a sample of your work?
Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?
A. Magic entails a wide variety of genres. Think about your needs. What type of magic are you looking for? What is your core audience, budget, location? The more information you have, the more a seasoned performer can help you with putting the right package together for your event.
Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?
A. Several traits that make my work in magic involve my background, training, and my culture.
First, I am a regularly performing member of the Magic Castle, the mecca of magic for magicians in Los Angeles and the world. There is a strict process to becoming a Magic Castle magician, and an even stricter process to becoming a performer there.
Beyond magic, my training lies in theatre, improvisation, and psychology. As a graduate of Theatre and Multimedia Production with a minor in Psychology, I have a deeper understanding of an audience, and take an approach to magic beyond simple tricks and illusions. I focus largely on the entertainment value of my craft - how it relates to an audience, what makes them laugh, and what makes them gasp.
Finally, as an Asian actor and entertainer born in Hollywood, my craft leaves a lot of room for a lot of unique comedy. Combined with the above, every show is fast-paced, high-energy, and uniquely entertaining. Please check out my website for proof!
Q. What do you like most about your job?
A. There are a LOT of wonderfully talented magicians in Los Angeles, and I am honored and humbled to be involved with such a tightly knit circle such as the Magic Castle. When I was a Magic Castle Junior Magician, many of the top professionals welcomed me with open arms and shared their specialized knowledge. This ongoing tradition has allowed me to do what I do today.
Most importantly, whether it's for a large group of professionals at a corporate event, a hall full of college students at a university, or a theater full of families aboard a cruise ship, the favorite part of my job is getting to meet people. To share in their culture, their stories, and their enthusiasm for my work is the primary reason I spend large chunks of my life traveling from show to show.
