Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: I have spent a considerable amount of time on the road, often in other countries, playing my own music for people. My main connection to music is through drumming, but I also spend a considerable amount of time writing my own songs and singing them in front of people while playing drums. These experiences have left me with a holistic understanding of the creative process, which has helped me prioritize the aspects of drumming are the most practical to develop. I believe in covering the basics of traditional technique, but I also firmly believe in the individual's (especially in the beginner's) ability to discover their own solutions, steered by their own ideas and artistic taste. I'm still hooked on that feeling you get when you're on a stage and everything is working....and even sometimes when nothing is working! As far as I'm concerned, it's all a step in the right direction, no matter the level of success. I view drumming as a way to converse and to get to know others through the language of music. I view practicing drums and writing music as a way to understand who I am, as a creative person with built-in intentions, tendencies and preferences. These are things that keep me playing!

Having Joe Westerlund as a drum instructor was truly a great experience. I came in as an adult looking to get back into drumming after having played as a teenager. Joe was sensitive to this and planned my lessons accordingly. After 5 minutes with him, I could tell Joe was going to be a blast to work with for half an hour per week. He was quick to cater the lessons to whatever genre of music I was interested in playing which may or may not have matched his personal tastes. Which, to be fair, it's hard to pigeonhole Joe into a specific genre given his vast experience and wide array of bands he's played and toured the world with. His positive attitude and gentle demeanor was comforting to me as a newbie to the lesson format as an adult and I found our time together to be quite enjoyable. Not to mention Joe's technical abilities and musical talents which are fantastic. If I were to recommend anyone I know, kid or adult, to a drum instructor, it would hands down be Joe Westerlund. Besides being a killer drummer, he's also a genuine, great guy.

Joe was my son's very first drum teacher. He thoroughly enjoyed each and every lesson and couldn't wait for the next one. Joe was an excellent teacher - patient, able to assess student abilities and needs, flexible, and basically able to make each lesson fun and productive. Six years later, my son is still an avid drummer, and still loves to learn. He got an excellent start thanks to Joe! if Joe hadn't moved to LA, he'd still be our teacher!

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I generally have a fixed rate for lessons given in my own studio. I am also willing to travel to the student's home if they own a drum set. When traveling to a lesson I compensate myself for gas money and the time spent on driving. The rate is all dependent on the time of day (ie. traffic!) and the distance of the student's home from mine.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I hold a BA in Music Composition/Improvisation from Bennington College. My teachers include 60s jazz innovator, Milford Graves, as well as composers Anthony Coleman and Kitty Brazelton, of the NYC Downtown creative music scene. Through working at Drum Doctors in Los Angeles in 2014, I have learned more about drum maintenance, vintage drum restoration, and drum tuning. Learning how to get the sound you want is a large part of playing the drums. There are so many sounds you can get from just one drum, which is one of the most exciting parts of playing this instrument! If you own a drum set, I can give a lesson on tuning and make suggestions on how you can cheaply improve the sound of your kit. Even the most entry-level drum set can sound great if you have the right tools and a willingness to experiment with the tuning and muffling.

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I started playing in bands with friends and taking formal lessons through school at the age of 12. I wasn't sure I was going to be a musician until I was 17 or 18, but playing music was something I definitely obsessed over from the beginning. There are countless musicians and bands I have drawn inspiration from. It's often the music of others that excites me, keeps me creating and working on my craft.
