I provide private piano lessons to all ages and levels. I am happy to teach classical mixed with popular, blues, jazz, etc. I also incorporate music theory into each lesson.

Everyone always loves my solo classical concerts with Broadway included if requested.
It is great fun for me to accompany other musicians, including singers and instrumentalists!
My special passion is performing 4-hand and 2 piano pieces.
The piano sounds like an entire orchestra!

After one session with Natalie I know my musical future is going to be bright. I had some basic understanding of the piano before coming, but I know I'm now in the right direction to achieving my goals. I very much look forward to my future classes.

My experience as Natalie's student was fantastic. She is a unique piano teacher in that she emphasizes theory studies along with her piano instruction. Her instruction gives students a strong background in the fundamental harmonic building blocks of music. As I now teach music theory (both as a graduate assistant at the Peabody Institute and as an instructor in theory and composition at the Levine School of Music in Washington, DC), I fully appreciate the strength and importance of Natalie's teaching methods. Many students go through their lessons without theoretical training, which unfortunately means that they often come up against a wall in their later music studies (regardless of specialization...performers need theory, too!). I highly recommend Natalie for her musicality and teaching philosophy.

Natalie is great! She is patient, attentive, timely, efficient, and (most imporantly) a fantastic teacher. I'm an adult learner, and she has always tailored her lessons to me in an easy, relaxed manner with a mind to achieving my goals. I highly recommend Natalie.

I have been a student with Natalie for about 5 years. When I first came to her I was barely able to read a measure of music. My music books were the Bastien books levels 1 and 2. Now I am playing the likes of Massenet, Ravel and Satie. All in 5 years. I cannot believe how far I have come. Reading music is second nature. Natalie is so wonderful and nothing if not encouraging. She never forces a student to learn any one type of music and is open to the students suggestions. She is a wonderful piano teacher.

Our daughter has been taking a lesson from Natalie for a year now. We are so amazed to how patient she is with her, who could sometimes be difficult as any 6 yrs old. And yet, at the same time, able to teach the skills she needs. As a piano player myself, I've seen and have gone through many different teachers. Natalie is definitely the best teacher of all. And we are so lucky to have her!

I have studied with Natalie for almost a year. As an adult student, one can become frustrated easily. However, Natalie continues to inspire and encourage me. She is very dedicated and patient as a teacher. She has taught me more than just playing the piano; I have developed a love and appreciation for music.

As a child I suffered through the drudgery of piano lessons. I was left with the impression that playing piano was just playing notes. Now as a retired school teacher, Natalie teaches me how to bring out the musicality in these notes. Natalie is an extraordinary piano teacher with a gifted ear and an amazing understanding of different musical styles. Most importantly, she has the ability to communicate how to create musicality from the notes. Taking piano lesson with Natalie is the best thing I’ve done for myself in a very long time.

Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. I give children and adults a life long skill that will help them be both more creative and logical. Here are a few quotes from students:

"as a child I suffered through the drudgery of piano lessons. Taking piano lesson with Natalie, is the best thing I’ve done for myself in a long time."
-Howard Lau

"What sets Natalie apart from other teachers is that she still performs in public as an accomplished artist. This is one of the many ways she earns respect from her students who appreciate her love for the piano. She is nurturing yet pushes her students to their fullest potential, always challenging me with pieces I thought I could not play. She loves what she does and I love going to my lessons, always feeling motivated and uplifted afterwards."
-Arturo Salgado

"Unlike many other fabulous pianists and fabulously gifted piano teachers I have known, Natalie was kind, patient, and always supportive of me as a musician. Even when I was frustrated with my playing, I always looked forward to my weekly lesson, where we hammered out whatever technical problems I had. I cannot recommend Natalie highly enough."
- Jeffrey Kessler, graduate of Yale University

"As a novice adult student, Natalie is the perfect combination of foundational theory and musical dynamics in a teacher, for me". - William Schilling

"Natalie is a wonderful, enthusiastic, well-organized teacher who has a profound sense of the music and how best to teach it. She applies an intelligent, analytical approach to resolving problems. Furthermore, she practices what she preaches, and is an expert musician who is a pleasure to hear."
- Janet Newburg

"Natalie was a wonderful teacher. She always had an amazing amount of energy and enthusiasm for every lesson. I learned a lot from her, not only from her teaching, but also from her positive attitude. I love music and I know that a good deal of that love was inspired by her musicality and by her teaching."
-Natalie Draper, music graduate of Carleton University

"Natalie is a great piano teacher- - she’s very patient and makes learning FUN!!!"
- Emma M. Kurdian

Q. Describe three recent jobs you've completed.

A. I am happily working with several referrals from Thumbtack. Everyone has improved their playing tremendously! In just a short time the adults with no experience can now read music and enjoy playing! Of course the students that are intermediate or advanced are moving to an even higher level of performance. It is a treat for me to be working with them!

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Look for someone who is professionally certified. I am that person. I have a graduate degree in piano and have kept up my education. I perform regularly and have my students perform in many recitals.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Does the teacher has a degree in music/piano? How many years have they been teaching? what levels?

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. What is your background in music? What type of music do you teach? what age and level?

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. It is important to match personalities between the student and teacher. I try to be very flexible in my approach with each student. Sometimes I will get a phone call or email asking what method I use for teaching. I try very hard to individualize each student and choose method books accordingly. I never use just one method. Supplementing these books with classical, favorites, jazz, etc. makes the lessons much more enjoyable and fun!

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. Musical Reviews:

"Perfect technique…exact spirit of the composers"
– Societe D’Arts, Bruxelles, Belgium

"...Greatly enjoyed the precision of the playing and the wide variety of nuance...sensitivity was never absent"
-L'Echo Musical, Belgium

"…executed perfectly the phrasing and dynamics…clear, sparkling runs…lovely interpretation…"
- Washington Post, Washington, DC

"The Joseph & Ross team performed with perfect synchronization"..."with closed eyes, no listener could detect where one stopped and the other started"
-Herald, Hagerstown, MD

"Joseph & Ross bring to the concert stage a freshness and relief from the mundane"
-Musicians Club of America, Miami, FL

What a pleasure and learning experience to work with Natalie Ross for 28 years--as a duo partner--she is not only a great musician, but a wonderful person and friend
- Ann Joseph, concert pianist and music teacher

Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.

A. If students want to be in evaluated recitals, I am happy to work with them so that they are well prepared. I have had many students receive 1st place ribbons or superior +++ ratings!
