Therese Walsh-Van Keuren, Ph.D., L.Ac.

Dr. Therese Walsh-Van Keuren is a licensed acupuncturist and a doctor of Taoist Medicine. In the State of California, we are primary care providers, which means that we have reimbursable services by most private insurance companies, we operate under a whole medical system.

Under the Whole Medical System of Taoist Chinese Medicine, we perform acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutritional medicine, functional medicine, clinical five element aromatherapy, neuro-emotional technique (NET) and therapeutic movement restoration techniques, (such as Yoga and Qi Gong.)

I am a clinician first, so my perspective is always going to come from that position, and I am a professor at Five Branches University, an author, a researcher and the originator of Divergent Meridian Therapy for Immune Repair and Regeneration.

The type of people that I work with are usually the ones who have been through a battery of tests for rather severe, debilitating symptoms that involve extreme and prolonged fatigue, chronic pain and/or inflammation in various tissues of the body, including internal organs, and the diagnostic tests were negative or inconclusive, so the GP physician will sometimes says that there is nothing wrong, and quite possibly, offer a prescription for an anti-depressant medication. This seems to me to be a repeated pattern I encounter.

I specialize in immune dysfunction and autoimmune diseases, chronic degenerative diseases, (such as cardio-vascular diseases, diabetes and metabolic syndrome, hypertension and high cholesterol, arthritis, CFS, FMS, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, hepatitis, digestive deterioration and decline, Crohn’s disease, etc.) and neuro-transmitter bio-chemical imbalance, showing up as anxiety, depression, insomnia, OCD and fatigue.

The benefits of acupuncture include the unblocking of the flow of Chi or energy. The Chinese says that wherever Qi stops flowing, disease begins. Using the meridians of the body, the highways that energy travels upon, we access and treat these pathways with needles, essential oils, cups, gua sha tools, ear seeds, and any other acu-point therapy that has been developed over the past 5000 years.

The benefits of herbal medicine include replenishing deficiencies, clearing heat, detoxifying tissues, and dissolving masses or accumulations. Botanical and animal parts are used in Chinese herbal medicine, processed in very specific methods and administered in very specific ways according to the symptom expression and constitutional profile of the person being treated.

The benefits of NET are to free you from the traumas of the past, in order to free you from self-sabotaging behaviors in the present. It is based on the work of Dr. Scott Walker, D.C.

I use true chi products: preventative solutions for health and vitality.

The line includes: elixirs, herbal formulations, essential oil custom blends, and stone or gem waters.

I am also in the process of publishing 3 books that I have written on topics in Chinese Medicine. Divergent Meridian Theory and Practice, Seizures, Spasms and Convulsions, and Breast Cancer and the Path to Wholeness.

I am new to the San Jose area and maintain a private practice in Los Angeles as well as building a new private practice here in the South Bay.

I have seen Dr. Walsh-Van Keuren on a number of occasions and I highly recommend her. In my latest visit she skillfully guided through NET (Neuro Emotional Technique) to release negative thought patterns and emotions I had been clinging to for a long time. These negative patterns were causing both physical and emotional suffering in my life. After only one session I felt healthier, lighter, and self empowered around the particular topic of our work. She is incredibly knowledgable, professional, and a joy to work with. And most importantly, she is truly gifted in her work.

Therese is the first doctor who spent an hour with me to really dig in and assess what was going on within my body to cause the symptoms I was having. She is incredibly knowledgeable, kind and reassuring - which I am sure for someone who doesn't like needles this would really make a tremendous difference (they don't bother me). I have also had a couple of NET sessions with Therese which are AMAZING, and have left me feeling emotionally and physically lighter. I highly recommend Therese for both acupuncture and NET work.

I had the opportunity to learn from Dr. Walsh-Van Keuren in the classroom during my first semester at Five Branches University. Her class was a pure delight. She is extremely knowledgeable in her field, well organized and engaged in the students learning. I also found her to be calm and patient.

Now in my fourth semester I am eagerly awaiting being able to learn from her in the clinic. I find her passion about healing invigorating and hope to model my style utilizing her approach to Chinese Medicine.

Dr. Walsh-Van Keuren is a real asset in our field. I would be happy to encourage anyone to see her.

Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. I would say that the most common complaint I hear are from people who have weak immune systems or hyper-reactive immune systems, allergies with sinus or digestive problems or just people who are tired all the time and cannot figure out why. Also, Lowback pain, knee pain, recovery from surgery and other typical pain syndromes are often why people seek out care from an acupuncturist.

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Take responsibility for your own health, and find a person who can partner with you, respect your decisions and meet you where you are at right now, to achieve the goals you have for feeling your best.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. If I were a patient, I wish that I knew that symptoms are a language that the body has to communicate what is happening inside our bodies, and that Chinese Medicine has a way to translate that language into meaningful ideas about how to answer the body to help it feel heard, and healed.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. After achieving a Ph.D. degree in Classical Chinese Medicine, I feel this is a real advantage in terms of training and expertise that goes beyond the MTOM level of skill and knowledge. I have a specialization in Immune Deficiency Disorders and Auto-Immune Diseases.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. I love being of service to the improvement of health and wellness. I am passionate about learning more and more in my field and integrating my work with other branches of Health Care and Health optimization standards.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. Does Acupuncture Work?? Absolutely, there is a reason that it is the oldest and longest, continuously running medical system on the planet. If you restore the free flow of Chi, Disease cannot root in the body.

Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?

A. I have a 32 year old patient who came to me with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Fibromyalgia, OCD, and sleep problems. She had this complex set of disorders starting at the age of 6 months old. She worked with me for 2 years, weekly for the most part and she no longer has any of these problems. She quit her job, her school and her "life" to be able to work on her health in a focused and concentrated way (which I realize is not possible for everyone to be able to elect). Through her health journey, she assisted me to develop a Clinical methodology in a style of acupuncture known as Divergent Meridian Acupuncture. This is the best and biggest experience I have had in my practice.

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. I wish patients knew that I have been hired as a formulator for many Herbal companies since 1998, and that I have had some of the best and most effective formulas developed by companies that respect the ancient knowledge I have spent so long acquiring, to offer the general public in terms of herbs that help to support perfect health

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. I was inspired to find my true path and to fulfill why I am here on this planet at this time.

Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.

A. I love when a person comes in for back pain, then brings up the fact that they have been on Nexium for 10 years and wants to work on their digestive problems with me, and then brings up the fact that they have had asthma since childhood and wants to strengthen their lungs so that they do not need to use their inhaler as much. Just happened again last week.

Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?

A. yes, we need to have 50 CEUs every 2 years to maintain our license renewals.

Q. What are the latest developments in your field? Are there any exciting things coming in the next few years or decade that will change your line of business?

A. Research is HUGE in the field of Chinese Medicine right now. If you go to: www.pubmed.com
and Type in: "acupuncture and Chinese medicine" into the search box, you will see thousands and thousands of published studies come up in every category of medical condition. This is a real age of enlightenment for our field in the U.S. right now.

Q. Describe your most recent project, what it involved, how much it cost, and how long it took.

A. I have written 3 books and am in the midst of publishing them. This is a BIG project! I am also teaching at Five Branches University in the clinical department.

Q. If you were advising someone who wanted to get into your profession, what would you suggest?

A. Go to the best Acupuncture school you can and focus on learning the basics for 4 years. When you get out and into private practice, you can pursue your more refined interests and continue studying with a teacher or multiple teachers that inspire you.

Q. Write your own question and answer it.

A. How do I heal?
Your health and your healing process is your responsibility. This is an important realization. No one can fix you. There is no magic pill, magic acupuncture point, magic healer, magic doctor or magic genie. The magic IS the healing. The healing comes from within you. The healing that your body is capable of generating is the true miracle!!

No one can tell you what is right for you. Only you can make that determination for your self, based on your education, research, connecting with others, intuition and learning from mistakes.

The medical professionals are there to provide you with information and options. They cannot fix you. You are not broken and therefore not fixable. You are healable and heal-ability comes from your innate intelligent mind/body.

The medical professionals are the signs on the side of your highway of life. (highway=the known, charted and shared universe) Some signs are old and outdated. Some have fallen down, or are hanging upside down and therefore, their message is read backwards from the original intention. Some are correct but not complete, some are complete, true and fully accurate-----but even the completely accurate ones cannot tell you what lies in the unknown territory just off the side of the road.

Maybe there are treasures buried beneath some old ruins that no one knew was there and they are only for you to find as you explore and investigate the unknown universe.

Follow what makes sense to you. If you begin to do something that does not feel right, switch strategies----but not out of panic and desperation. When in doubt; wait, reflect, ask your inner advisor.

There are many GREAT books (libraries, internet sites) to use to investigate your options. Do not feel pressured to begin treatment until you are satisfactorily informed. There are many beautiful restoration stories of recovered health. Fear and its many masks; anxiety, terror, panic, or hysteria keep a disease condition in the dark ages of ignorance, preventing the shedding of light upon the issue. The dissemination of information always dispels fear, which is the only obstacle to healing.
The greatest Chinese Medicine teacher of our time, Jeffrey Yuen, reminds us that “there are no incurable diseases, only incurable people”, and if the invitation to change your behavior/actions is not answered, then the message contained within the symptom communication attempts have not been heard and acknowledged. If the invitation to change is accepted, the called for changes are implemented, the symptom expression will begin to subside.

Healing is something you engage. It is in your grasp. It can be enhanced (through herbs, nutrients and diet), accessed (through acupuncture modalities, qi cultivation, breathing techniques, and postures), and magnified (laser, vibrational tools, moxa, etc.), but the only place it can be found is within you. Healing is finding a sense of wholeness and complete well-being. It is not about being saved or skirting death, although this can happen. It is not about cheating death, because it can happen right in the midst of the dying process, and often does.

Seek assistance and do accept help in order to take on the true challenge of healing: a journey within your self.
