Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. It seems I sing about the same amount of private parties as I do events and concerts. I really love private parties because I get to know people on a personal level. A fantastic couple in Paradise invited me to come to their yacht in Mexico, all expenses paid once I arrive. An absolutely georgious woman and her handsome husband. They invited guests that were close friends, and charming people.
People are wonderful! I meet the best people over and over again. One fabulous couple down Neil Rd. had a party and I met the greatest family there. Just fantastic. And another couple who live nestled by Paradise lake in an outstanding estate in the Magalia area, are the most brilliant, elegant couple and have an absolute heart of gold. No matter where you go...there is love and joy and affection and happiness. Just open your heart and your eyes and there it is!

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Ask for a demo cd or hear them sing first hand. I would recommend that you not go by reviews or word of mouth alone, unless you really know the person.
Read what the reviews have to say, and who is giving the review.
Be sure to give them a list of songs you would like to hear. Most singers if they are any good, will be happy to sing your favorite songs.
Its your event, so make it as personal as you can.
Enjoy!

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Give the preformer a list of specific songs you want at your event. They need to give you exactly what you want.
Confirmation of reservation and details in writing is important. E-mail or conventional mail.
When looking for an entertainer, either listen to a demo, or talk to friends and family who have seen and heard the preformance.
Big price doesn't always mean Big results. Most bands and entertainers are pretty expensive. Compare and read reviews, talk to people and know what your getting. Not all musicians are the same. :)
Joyful, fun, and relaxed people are fun to share experiances with.

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. YOU CAN WARD OFF ANY UNPLEASANT COMPLICATIONS BY FOLLOWING SOME SIMPLE ADVICE.
Important things I need to know in order to give you success at your event;
*Are we preforming indoors or outdoors? What is the power source?
* Is it covered from the elements? ( sun and rain)
* What size is the area you will be having the musician?
* Do you want "listening music, dance music, what style, what era, what artists music?
* Ask your preformer to come to the location to see where to be set up, and what type of lighting , stage, and electrical outlets there are.
Information you provide us allows us to use speakers that will be proper for the size of the room. You want ample volume for the guests to really enjoy the event.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. Here is what people are saying in California, Oregon and Washington and more.....

Dorothy has the innate ability to take any song, recorded by any artist, and make it her own. She has excellent vocal range and is blessed with the ability to add stylistic intonations at appropriate places in a song, setting her apart from much of the field. Though the sound comes from the voice box the music comes from her heart and that becomes apparent with just the first few notes that she sings. Watching her perform a song is almost as pleasing an experience as just listening to her as she radiates a contagious sense of joy leaving no doubt that she is doing something she loves.
Given her relative newness on the music scene and limited formal training I'd rate her a definite 5 star performer who has an incredibly promising future.
-Art Messenger ( Paradise, CA.)

Alan Castrian I give you 5 stars ***** “such versatility with your songs, well done.”
“I have fortunately seen Dorothy Clark perform live on stage and have enjoyed both her voice and stage presence. As a former booking agent and concert / show promoter I would have to rate her 5 stars. I look forward to her full feature debut (both video & audio) performance in the near future.” FIVE STARS *****
~B. Cunningham, Yowzers ( Paradise, CA.)
Judy Smith- “Fantastic voice quality. Loved the concert! Five ***** Stellar
performance!”

· alancastrian - Ah Linda Ronstadt my favourite female vocalist, this is an excellent cover so I have rated it FIVE STARS *****

Concert at Smokie Mountain Steakhouse, Paradise CA;
Bob Morrow ( Paradise, CA.) I've listened to Dorothy Clark sing for years. I go to see and hear her every chance I get. She's by far one of the most enjoyable local singers I know. I love the way she delivers a song, her sweet voice, her personable style, and her song selection as well. If I owned a night club or theater which needed a female singer, Dorothy would be at the head of the short list of singers I'd want performing for me. In a word, I think she is AWESOME!

Concert in Chico California review;
”When I first heard of Dorothy Clark I didn't know what to expect but then she began to sing. I was completely stricken with her amazing talent from her first song and couldn't wait for more. An amazing, humble lady with an amazing voice, truly five star !
- Malinda Shotwell Enrichment Coordinator-The Oakmont Retirement Community” FIVE STAR PERFORMANCE *****

A 1920's Concert review;
Dorothy Clark is my kind of a singer! I am in my eighties & like what I hear. I can relate to her music. I would give it ALL a 5 star rating.
Several of my favorites are “I Love You For Sentimental Reasons” and “ I Only Have Eyes For You”
I have been to several of her performances and she is always well received. -Phillip G. Uhas

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. I love the interaction between the audience and myself. Nothing is more rewarding than watching the smiles, tears, or laughter, or to see someone jump up and start dancing. Music is my gift to give, by creating precious moments, sparking fond memories of the past, or creating a new memory. My desire is to fill hearts with a joy equal to the joy I experiance while preforming. A song can take the audience to a place that will long be treasured in their heart.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. What type of songs do you sing?
Every type of music, I preform country, jazz, 20's on up. I have themes such as hawaiian, folk, country, Valentines Day, Christmas, Summer Bash, Dance hits, and more.

How long have you been singing?

"Since I was a toddler. Being the youngest of six children, I learned well. Dad came home at the end of a hard day, and pulled out his Silvertone electric guitar and us kids would sit on the floor around his feet. He taught us so many songs, mostly folk songs. We all learned to harmonize and play guitar and piano and more. Our childhood was full of music, whether on the radio, the record player, or dad with his guitar. In later years my brothers played as did my sisters, and last of all me."
Where have you preformed?
"Washington, Oregon, California and a little back East. I was honored to sing opening for John Anderson and Willie Nelson years and years ago. I had the good fortune to sing with Jim Nailon, a handsome and talented guitarist who taught classical guitar at Lower Columbia College, in Longview Washington. "
How far will you travel to sing?
" no limits, as long as I am paid for the travel"
What was your biggest tip?
" I have been tipped $100.00 bills many times. Yes! I am shocked and amazed and humbled by such generosity"
Why dont you try out for American idol?
"I don't feel "better than" any one. I don't feel competative. I'm singing because it makes me feel so happy to give the gift of song, and haven't given much thought to being competative. I guess "competative" has not been my nature. I love everyone and everything, everywhere!

Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?

A. I was singing a concert and a middle aged lady asked me to announce to all the guests that they should really appreciate their fathers, and that she was celebrating her dads 90th birthday. I did annouce that and then played a waltz for all daughters to ask their father to dance. All across the concert hall one by one, girls very young to very old, all walked up to their dad and took their hand and danced. I had tears in my eyes as I watched the number of couples grow, and the looks on each face. Daughters, with such love for their dads, and the fathers, obviously so touched by their daughters affection.There was a fairly young dad close to the stage who's little girl, probably 8 or so came up and took his hand. She was delicate and sweet. He looked so surprised and happy. It appeared he was holding back tears. He touched his chest asking his daughter, "Really?" as he stood up and danced. Close by them was a elderly man and his daughter, and though he was frail, he slowly made it to his feet and they danced. His daughters arms were wrapped around his neck and her eyes were sparkling with tears. It was the highlight of my singing career. I will never forget that night.

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. *I preform private parties. I use a mix of DJ and singing, and really get the party going. We know how to get people up and dancing.
* weddings
* funerals
* clubs
* birthday parties
* anniversary
* retirement parties
* office parties
* restraunts
* casinos
* cruises
* family reunions

*Its more work that you may realize. its not all glamour and fun. It is a job and I do take it seriously. I have bookings right now clear into June. This is Jan.2011. WOW! So please call as soon as you can to schedule your party or event. I have openings, but its best to call in advance when your able.

* I sing all charity work for free. ( veterans, cancer, diabetes, foodbanks, handicapped children or adults, and more. I believe it is a better world when we all try to pitch in and give what we can, even an hour a year...we all matter and we can all make a difference in the world by giving our time and energy.

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. My father, Frank Lockwood, was a fantastic singer and guitarist. Dad worked really hard for P.C.A. in Davenport California,and at the end of day he would come home covered in cement dust and only his eyes would be without dust. His hair and clothes were white with cement. He would go shower and then come sit and play his guitar and sing to unwind. We never had much money and with six kids, it was hard for my parents, but we had wonderful fun times. But dad could sing and play like nobodies busness. Mom threw patio dances all the time, and garden parties. I asked dad from the time I was knee high to a grasshopper, "Daddy, why dont you go on t.v. like Perry Como? I would actually get upset with dad for not doing it! But dad was shy and the world would never know his talent. What a shame. I adored my mom and dad very much. Mom was the type to hand clothes out on the line, plant flowers and a nice vegetable garden, sew us girls pretty dresses and take good care of our home. Dad was a worker. He built our home with his own hands, no power tools used! I was dads fishing buddy, me and daddy put up the hay on 22 acres, every year, and together we got the winter firewood. He cut it and I loaded it, unloaded it and stacked it for the winter. Dad got up in his 80's and became real sick and was dying, He had had many strokes but this one parylized his left side, leaving his eye closed and his arm limp. He looked at his arm and touched it, and he couldn't speak. Mom went home to take a nap and I sat beside his bed and held his hand and talked to him. I promised him I would not leave his side and I didn't. I put a cool cloth on his forehead and sang softly to him. I sang every song we ever sang in the Methodist church. We used to fill up two pews, momma, papa, grandma, and us six kids and sometimes relatives besides!
I sang to papa until the sun sank down, and he turned to looked at me and a tear rolled down his cheek. I told him "I will see you in heaven one day, and though it is the hardest thing I've ever had to do, I have to let you go. Its okay daddy, just let yourself fall into the arms of Jesus, because seeing you suffer this is hurting so much." I assured him that he was a great dad, and that I would take real good care of momma. I kissed his forehead and hand and he closed his eyes and within a half hour, he just slipped away so peaceful. I was looking out the window at the dusk and praying for God to not leave me alone; I couldnt' do this alone. God was there with us.
When dad died, I told myself, that I would sing my songs and not let his music die with him. I was scared to death and my heart would pound in my chest. I had sang for years and never made it past the fear. I sang and would lift my eyes to heaven, asking God to please let dad hear my singing down here.
There is a saying, " the bird sings not because he is happy, he is happy because he sings" and that is my moto. So if your ever feeling blue, just sing a song and you cannot help but feel better! Song brings so much joy to the heart! Time does heal a broken heart.
I started singing full time then and haven't stopped.

Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.

A. What do you remember about that wedding, party or event that you attended a month a year or five years ago? Not the decorations or food, or the weather. Memories are of the fun times shared!
Although we have preformed thousands of concerts, some really shine. Its hard to say what makes some concerts stand out. Because we give so much energy and joy in our presentation, I believe the variable is in the circumstances, and a stress free environment. Relax and have fun. Fun is contagious, and positive attracts positive. We are there to make your event really shine. When the guests are dancing, singing along, and enjoying themselves, the satisfaction and joy we feel is really rewarding.
Success to us is not about the amount of money we made, or the number of people attending. Its the "feedback" we recieve. We always get great reviews and feedback from our audience. Everyone has a good time and leaves with a smile and everywhere I go people run up to me and want to compliment the preformance. I appreciate that so much!
Everywhere we go, we make new friends, meet wonderful people and have a great time. God has been really good to me and I always feel so much graditude for what I have. My creator gave me a chance to sing and enjoy my life and for this I say, "Thank you!". I am truely blessed.

Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?

A. We constantly add new songs and will preform songs at the customers request, so we are learning and growing week by week, adding more music. Inbetween shows I listen to the "greats" of music, men and women alike. I want to learn from them, discover some traits or styles that I find helpful. All the great singers and songs from as far back as the late 1800's shed light on my path to success.There are so many obscure songs of the past and so many wonderful artists to draw from. I will never have "enough" music. I will always be adding new songs.

Q. What are the latest developments in your field? Are there any exciting things coming in the next few years or decade that will change your line of business?

A. Recently scientists and universities have discovered the "healing qualities" of music. Music promotes health, well being and healing. In some hospitals, they are utilitizing music as a healing aide.
Sing and let your heart be merry! Happiness promotes well-being. You dont need an excuse or reason to have a party and celebrate life and stay healthy! Have a potluck, have some music to dance and sing along to. Have fun! Celebrate life today!

Q. Describe your most recent project, what it involved, how much it cost, and how long it took.

A. Well...its not "finished" yet.
Project? Staying alive. It can cost very little or alot. Just depending on what your goals are. Im not finished yet.... its going to take my lifetime.
So....my project? To be kind, to be loving, patient, forgiving to all people, everywhere, always, and to sing. Sing everywhere! To give as much as I can, while never emptying my cup. Only giving from the overflow. Being a light in the world. To not be negative, and to be kind and forgiving to myself. To love myself. To never forget special people in my life. Thank you Zack, Elaine, mom, Amber, Elizabeth, POA friends, Claire, and everyone!
oh.....and my next goal is to sing on a cruise. I have been in contact but was apprehensive. I believe it will be a part of my experiance during my lifetime. :)

Q. If you have a complicated pricing system for your service, please give all the details here.

A. BENEFIT/FUNDRAISER CONCERTS ARE NO CHARGE. I encourage you to do the same. If you can only give one hour a week or one hour a year then do it. Schools, hospitals and youth programs and so many others can really use our effort. Every person counts!

Live music pricing depends on the distance we travel and somewhat depends on the length of the party. When we travel out of State, travel and accomodations are included in the pricing. People say they are "thrilled with our pricing" and that we don't charge nearly enough. I'm happy and content and if your happy too, I see no reason to charge more. Gifts of gratuity are always abundant. Again, we are truely blessed. We are happy to be helping you celebrate your event!

Q. If you were advising someone who wanted to get into your profession, what would you suggest?

A. If you want to be an entertainer, then by all means "Follow your heart, and your dream." There will never be to many singers and every one has a purpose, a role to play. There is room and need for all of us. We share a beautiful world and I think the gift of music is a great thing! Your ability comes not from the brain but from the heart...so give from the heart! It will prove to be very rewarding. I think one of the silliest things I have ever seen is being "territorial" or "jealous" or mean. There is no need of such silliness. Be kind, be loving, and be supportive of all people everywhere. This world is great because of all the flavors we have to experiance, in life, and love, and our experiance of living.

Q. Write your own question and answer it.

A. I have only one stab at this specific event. How do I make it the best?

THIS IS IT! Your big event! So plan well, stay within your budget, keep positive, be very sure that all workers understand how important it is to you that they have a pleasant smile during your event. Once the day arrives, let go and just relax. Enjoy yourself, because years later all anyone remembers is not the food, the decorations, or the wind, they remember the FUN!
Best Wishes to you!~Dorothy
