Tony Nolasco and his construction crew far exceeded my expectations about General Contractors and what they say before contracts are signed and what is actually delivered. In the past, I have hired General Contractors to update homes I have owned in the past. The jobs started with promises and ended with both my husband and me completely dissatisfied with the entire process. I found the Nolasco Construction Group from a friend who lives across town. I was impressed by the professionalism, the quality of work and Tony’s suggestion for materials to use in our second story addition. Overall, I would give them an A+ for their service and how they conducted themselves while in our home.

The Nolasco Construction Groups was a treat to work with while I traveled on business during much of our room addition project. I was able to get daily updates and photos that I was able to access from my computer while on the East coast working on consultant project. I was put at ease knowing I didn't have to be physically present on the work site to see the project in progress. When challenges during the build occurred, like they typically do, I found the team at Nolasco Construction Group right there with solutions. I also felt good leaving my family at hope as the sub-contractors worked inside and out of our home. The quality of workmanship was excellent and the budget was right-on, except for a few change-orders we made half-way through the construction. I am very happy with the finished additional room. We saved money by expanding our home rather then moving to a larger space.

Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. Since the inception of the Nolasco Construction Group in 2001, we have specialized in residential construction projects that include full kitchen and bathroom remodeling. In today’s economy, many of our customers have made a decision not to move up in house size, but rather add custom room additions for growing families and aging parents. We serve the five main towns at the heart of Silicon Valley. We offer excellent workmanship and materials on all our projects giving the customer exactly what they want.

Our team is excited to work with your ideas and create a functional, as well as, an aesthetically impressive kitchen remodel that fits your families needs and budget. We can manage your kitchen remodeling project from custom cabinetry updates to complete kitchen renovation and appliance replacements.

Q. Describe three recent jobs you've completed.

A. The first was a room addition for a family that is expecting their third child. The second was a wine cellar for a local famous wine connoisseur, and lastly we added a "Mother-n-Law " suite to an Atherton estate.

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. First, check your Contractor with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) website for any complaints over the past three years.

Ask the contractor for at least three references from recent customers who have worked with the provider. It can be especially beneficial to get feed back from a project that didn't start well. The General Contractor was able to fix the issue and convert the homeowner into a satisfied customer. Lastly, meet the Contractor in person and use your intuition to determine if you like the person who will be working on your home and if your trust them around your family and property.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. How the General Contractor estimates the proposed project and what happens if the estimate goes-over budget? This can a nightmare for any homeowner who feels they are being held-up because the General Contractor refuses to finish the job unless additional money is paid.

A valuable tip that will help protect your property and your wallet is to ask for a detailed project timeline. It is essential to have agreed upon milestones for work to be completed. Think about making your installment payments based on the work completed. This will give the Contractor an incentive to finish the project on-time. If you don’t have your expectations on paper, there's no accountability. Also, watch out for changes orders and make sure you sign-off on any additional work before the contractor begins to make any change order.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. The first question, a homeowner must ask is if the General Contractor bidding on their project is licensed to do business by the state of California. All the subcontractors who work with us are first screened for valid licenses and insurance. These trades include electrical, plumbing, heating, and air. By using a licensed contractor, you will be assured they will do the work agreed to in their estimation.

A second question to ask is if the service professional has reviews. Be careful, many of the reviews can be posted by the contractor themselves. Check with the Better Business Bureau for contractor's past if there were any complaints made. If they have below an “A” or if they aren’t the BBB database, move on to the next General Contractor. Be wary of review sites because many of the testimonials or reviews can be manipulated by the business owner.
