Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A. Licensed, bonded and insured Roofing and Waterproofing service providers need accurate, complete information to present the customer with realistic proposals that meets their project and budget objectives. Also, be clear and realistic about your schedule requirements - project schedules can impact the project costs.
Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?
A. Most roofing and waterproofing products are made in USA.
Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?
A. Are they a Licensed and Bonded Contractor with the State of California? Check them out at http://www.cslb.ca.gov/
Do they have worker compensation and liability insurance?
Do they "spell out" in detail the conditions of the contract and the materials to be used and work to be done? Understand all the details by asking questions.
Do they acquire a "Building Permit"? By doing so it relieves the building owner of a very weighty responsibility. The California Law requires that one be obtained for all construction projects except minor repairs.
Do they guarantee your building against rain damage during the process of the roof removal operation?
Be sure to compare workmanship and material warranty. There is a difference between the two.
Are they asking for "up-front" money? California state law states a contractor can accept 10 % of the contract price up too $1,000 for residential projects. In some case if a contractor has filed a Blanket Performance And Payment Bond with the State of California, Contractor State License Board, the contractor may ask for a minimum of 25 % of the contract amount.
Do they have a client list. Call or go buy and look at their most recent jobs installed.
Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.
A. Two years ago, we received a call from a potential customer who received 3 different roof quotes for complete tear-off and roof replacement. There was a lot of water damage inside her unit however, due to the age of the roof she questioned why the roof was in need of replacement. During our inspection, we discovered an improper sheet metal detail over the atrium/window. We redesigned the detail and included a water-test to make sure the roof was watertight. To date no roof leaks have returned. She is another satisfied OM Roofing Inc customer!
