Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. Helping people, service industry, personal assisting, managing restaurant, promotion/pr, life coaching...

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Make sure you stop by the place of business prior to your first appointment/class. Go and check it out and see how it feels to you. Make sure you are comfortable before you spend your money.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. The fitness and wellness industry is very saturated, especially lately, and there are so many choices out there. You can easily get hurt taking many classes and using some techniques that are floating around. Go with what has been around a while, not all the trendy spots that are popping up everywhere. There is a reason certain businesses have been successful for so many years.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. Have you had experience working with someone like me? Do you have any before and after photos of your work? Do you have testimonials? Could I watch one of your workouts before I participate?

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. What exactly do they want to get out of a workout with me? What is their focus? How much of a priority is their health?

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. I go beyond the body: I care about the world our bodies live in. By leading an organic and eco-conscious lifestyle, I have chosen to gear my energies toward the bigger picture. It is about more than working out and eating well and staying balanced. It is about giving back. As Ghandi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” I am trying to do just that. One day at a time, one body at a time.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. Everything. I truly enjoy every class I teach, every student, every private client, every learning opportunity, and every chance I get to grow as a professional. I consider myself truly lucky to have been in this industry for over 25 years now and still love it.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. What's the fastest way to lose weight? And I tell them that as soon as they let go of that question then they are on their way. It is a journey and the body is organic and has its own pace and reasons for it. The focus is more about honoring the body then rushing it.

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. That I truly care about the people I work with and I love my job. My profession can be quite ego driven and trendy and I am neither.

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. My background is in dance. I started when I was 9 years old and since then have been involved with this industry. I began teaching at a local gym in 1986 and opened my first studio in 1991. I haven't stopped since.

Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.

A. I just finished a 6 week fitness challenge for a new fitness product that just launched. I helped 30 women lose 415 inches and 267 pounds. It was a wonderful experience.

Q. Do you do any sort of continuing education to stay up on the latest developments in your field?

A. I am always learning and continuing to integrate new ideas into my work. My latest is a 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training I just completed through Rising Lotus in Sherman Oaks.

Q. What are the latest developments in your field? Are there any exciting things coming in the next few years or decade that will change your line of business?

A. There are always developments in my field. What I try to focus on is the steadfast and tried and true concepts, what has worked for decades for people and their bodies, not was is the latest trendy gadget or concept. Having said that I do incorporate many cool, hip new concepts into my work and I love the innovative ideas that are coming to the industry. I tend to lean more on the body as an organic vehicle and use breath and movement as my focus.

Q. Describe your most recent project, what it involved, how much it cost, and how long it took.

A. My most recent work project was an infomercial I did for the launch of a new home fitness product. I worked with 30 women for 6 weeks and trained them everyday. We worked on nutrition and fitness to help them reach their goals. As a group they lost 267 pounds and 415 inches. it was quite motivating. The entire project took a few months but the workouts took 6 weeks including filming the infomercial.

Q. If you were advising someone who wanted to get into your profession, what would you suggest?

A. Do it! It is a wonderful way to spend your time and make a living; helping others. I would encourage someone to go around their town and visit the gyms, studios, etc. and talk to people in the industry and feel out what specialty they would like to focus on.

Q. What is your greatest strength?

A. I believe my greatest strength is my ability to work with a diverse group of people, personalities, and body types. I have been in this industry for over 25 years so I feel quite confidant in helping people in all areas of their life. I have helped women go through breast cancer, supported students through loss of loved ones, divorce, major life transitions, health problems, injuries, and the average every day woes as well. I love helping people so I can relate on a sincere level. I believe they sense that and feel safe.

Q. What are you currently working on improving?

A. I am always improving my workouts, deepening my understanding of the human body and mind. I am integrating a lot of yoga and breath work lately so that is my focus at the moment. I plan on always integrating as much as I can so my clientele benefits from a well rounded workout with diversity.
