Grow Assessment and Counseling Services, located in the San Francisco Bay Area, offers an array of mental health and educational services to help young people achieve success.

We provide psychoeducational assessment to uncover the causes of children and adolescents' challenges at school. We test for learning disabilities, ADHD, autism-spectrum disorders, and emotional challenges that may be interfering with learning. As a part of the assessment process, we also develop an individualized intervention plan to support the student. Collaboration with the student's school is also included, so that testing results may be successfully translated into practical interventions.

We also provide counseling and coaching to support students' development of study skills and self confidence at school. We specialize in coaching students with difficulties with organization, planning, test-taking, test anxiety, and study skills.

At Grow, we believe in helping students achieve their maximum potential, and feel good about themselves as learners. We strive to educate families, teachers, and students themselves, about how students learn best, so they may thrive in school.

Question and answer

Q. Write your own question and answer it.

A. Q: What is psychoeducational assessment?

A: When children and adolescents are having difficulties in school, there can be a number of different causes. A psychoeducational assessment (sometimes referred to as a neuropsychological assessment) uncovers the reasons why a student is struggling in school is having challenges. These reasons range from environmental or situational factors, to neurological factors (e.g. learning disabilities, ADHD), to emotional factors (e.g. anxiety, depression).

The assessment process starts with a parent interview to better understand the student's learning and development from a historical perspective. Then, the student is observed in his or her school environment, and the teachers and professionals who work with the student are interviewed. This allows for a deeper understanding of the child's learning environment.

The bulk of the assessment process involves individual testing with the student. The testing measures are carefully selected to address the referral question, but typically they include an intelligence test, tests of how the student processes information best, academic testing to determine what grade level the student is on in reading, writing, and math, behavioral and motivational assessment, and a social-emotional assessment to see how the student thinks and feels about him or herself as a learner.

All of the data from testing and the information from the parents and school are analyzed and a written report is provided to the parents. This report outlines how the student learns best, and provides recommendations for the student to minimize learning weaknesses and tap into learning strengths. If appropriate, a diagnosis is given. At times, a diagnosis may lead to school and testing accommodations, or open up eligibility for special services. The final step of the process is educating parents on the next steps to take to support the student's learning, so that he or she may maximize learning potential.
