I am very professional at all times. I have had people hire me and say that I can eat dinner with them or have a drink myself or come out from behind the bar and mingle but I believe in keeping it professional at all times. That way you never have a problem or issue arise. I am courteous, friendly, knowledgeable, quick, accurate, thoughtful, and creative. If a guest doesn't know what he or she would like to drink, I will make suggestions or ask what type of liquor they like or what tastes good to them and then go from there. Sometimes we end up with a concoction but its ok as long as the guests are happy.
What I love most about bartending is the people you meet and talk to. Everyone has a story to tell to anyone that will listen. The key is to listen. Sometimes guests ask you for advice (which I try not to get into) and sometimes they just like to share news or sadness. Guests usually don't remember the drinks you make them or what your name is but they will remember if you were nice, courteous, professional, friendly and if you gave great customer service, so if that includes listening to them while your working so be it. If they remember your name, its a bonus! Next time they come to you for a drink, a good bartender will remember what drink they ordered before.
